Birth Control in Light of Islam and Science

Contraception, also known as contraception and fertility control, are methods or devices used to prevent pregnancy. Over the past 50 to 60 years, the discussion of birth control or population control has grown so much that it has become a talking point on television, radio, the internet, and all other different platforms.

Ahmad and Abu Dawood reported by proxy Ma’qil Ibn Yasar (May Allah be pleased with him) who narrated that there came to the Messenger of Allah a man (PBUH) and said:

“I have found a woman worthy and beautiful, but she does not bear children. Shall I marry her?” He said, “No.” He came to him again, but he forbade him. He came to him the third time and he (the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Marry women who are loving and very fertile, for through you I will surpass the nations.”

This hadith indirectly calls for abstaining from contraception and similar practices.

Consequences of contraceptive methods on maternal health

It has been scientifically proven that the use of contraceptive methods has dire consequences for the mother’s health. The female reproductive system is controlled by a group of reproductive hormones secreted from the frontal lobe of the pituitary gland and the ovaries. In a normal state, these hormones are produced in measured degrees. Any increase or decrease in this value can lead to disease. Therefore, medical scientists admit that all contraceptives adversely affect their users. This is the result of many researches done in this regard. Some of the dire consequences of using birth control are as follows:

1. Imbalance of body hormones

2. Weight gain and fluid retention.

3. Severe inflammation in the female reproductive system.

4. Increased vulnerability to fatal heart attacks in people over thirty, more so in those over forty.

Death of a woman who used birth control pills

News agencies once reported on the case of a British woman who died as a result of taking birth control pills. She used tablets known as Valdan for eight years before changing to another known as Mythoclore for medical advice. After a few weeks of the change, she fell ill and became bedridden. Later, her health deteriorated and she died.

Recently, it has been found that the use of contraceptives, especially the pill, can lead to some cases of cancer.

The most balanced advice

The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) wanted to forbid breastfeeding a child if the mother becomes pregnant, had he not known that the Romans were doing so. This is because such breastfeeding could damage the suction and hinder the growth of the infant.

If we were to think deeply about this prophetic guidance, we would realize that the period between one pregnancy and another is three years, especially if we go back to Allah’s statement:

“Mothers will suckle their children for two whole years, (that is) those (parents) who wish to complete the period of breastfeeding.” (Soorah Al-Baqarah 2:233)

Then we would find that giving the mother the opportunity to fully recover her health (after the birth of the child) is a matter that religion enjoins, as opposed to the absolute prevention of pregnancy through contraceptive methods.

Status in Muslim and Arab countries

It is strange that most Muslim countries have been swept away by the so-called contraceptive campaign under the guise of facing economic and social challenges. Huge sums of money are earmarked for this campaign, which could be used for more useful economic and social projects. It is very important to note here that the real problem is not the lack of resources but the unequal distribution of resources among people. Today, wealth and resources circulate and are concentrated among the rich, leaving the masses of the population unable to achieve their due.

Classified reports in one of the Arab countries confirm that what is spent on the contraceptive campaign in a single year, in terms of vehicles purchased, doctors and nurses hired, drugs and other materials purchased, operations performed and hospitals used, is enough to cared for more than a million children at a time when the birth rate in this country did not exceed half a million births.

In addition, there are some Muslim countries that have projects and job opportunities where there is not enough manpower, forcing these countries to import workers from Asian and European countries to help them implement their projects.

On the other hand, there are other Muslim countries that are overpopulated but lack sufficient capital to set up projects in which their overpopulated population could find gainful employment. Cannot these countries benefit from the former in order to promote the brotherhood of mankind? In fact, human resources are the basis of progress and development if they are properly utilized instead of lamenting that there are not enough options.

Contraceptive failure rate

The Prophet’s saying in the hadith: “If Allah willed to bring something into existence, nothing can prevent it,” is also a perfect miracle that can only be understood by those who have studied contraceptive methods and their success rates. Despite all these different methods, pregnancy still sometimes occurs if Allah (SWT) wishes and orders so.

The gynecologist said: “I had a patient come to me and inform me that she had a tubal ligation in London, only to find out that she had become pregnant a few months later.”

The failure rate of these contraceptives is 55 percent if they are barrier and intrauterine methods, and the rate drops to 1 percent only if they are performed by surgical operations and by an experienced surgeon. However, many researchers still note a failure rate of up to 37 percent in operations performed even by experienced surgeons. There are even cases of pregnancy after removal of the uterus. Therefore, the Noble Prophetic Hadith is a perfect miracle in establishing this scientific fact. And Allah (SWT) knows best.
