5 tips to help you EASILY lose weight and look your best!

We all want to look and feel our best, but we often don’t know where to start. So to welcome us all into 2010 and the new decade, I thought I’d put together a quick report on 5 EASY tips to help us all jumpstart and get us back on the path to a healthy, full life.

1. SUPERFOODS

Don’t be discouraged, I think about our common everyday foods that are actually serious weapons in our armory that breaks down. Things like –

Water

Green tea

Apples and pears

Oatmeal

Broccoli

Low-fat yogurt

Grapefruit

Hot peppers

Lean beef, pork, chicken and turkey (lean protein – tofu will also count)

Salmon, tuna and sardines (omega 3, which you can also get from flax seeds)

Homemade soup

All of these foods (and I include water as a food) help boost our metabolism so our bodies burn more energy. These are ovens, so to speak. Some can be eaten during the day when we need a snack because they also fill us up but are low in calories. Some of them have an incredible ability to help us get rid of toxins, like water and apples. I’ve covered these foods and more in other posts – just sign up for a free email every week to make sure you get them.

Oh, and the occasional red wine or real beer won’t hurt – just don’t overdo it and they’re high in empty calories and of course contain alcohol, which stimulates the appetite and puts a strain on the liver.

2. EXERCISE

Okay, I know, not everyone gets all hot and sweaty after a few runs around the block. But exercise doesn’t have to be boring or ‘hard work’. It can be just as much fun as dancing around the lounge with your favorite group or learning a bit of martial arts – and before you start shuddering at visions of ninja warriors, Tai Chi is also a martial art.

Exercise increases metabolic rate, improves blood circulation, increases bone density, tones and strengthens muscles, burns calories and many other things. Just 20 minutes a day can change the world.

Here are some ideas to help you see how exercise can fit into your life

Swimming – lengths of the pool, aqua aerobics…

Dance – ballroom, disco, salsa, belly, front room…

Running, jogging, brisk walking

Vigorous Housework – hovering, dusting, ironing

Garden work, digging, weeding

Walking the dog, walking to work, walking up the stairs, running away from the dog…(or kids…)

Admission to class – Tai chi, yoga, pilates

Entering the gym, using light weights

Making love

Anything that gets us moving is a form of exercise, so if you’re short on time to fit walking into your day, stop by once a week after work for a class. Exercise will also energize and strengthen you, so you should see the benefits after a very short period of time. If you are the lonely type, start walking, jogging or dancing in the front room/bedroom.

Ideally 20 minutes a day and several 1 hours a week will help you stay in top shape.

3. SPRING CLEANING

Not many people mention this, but your home makes a big difference when you’re trying to lose a little weight. When things around us are messy, we tend to be less focused and more disorganized ourselves. A good spring cleaning will not only increase the calories burned, but also help us create space for internal cleansing. It makes us more comfortable – when there’s a degree of chaos around us, it’s much harder to focus on ourselves and our needs, and much easier to slip into old habits. Also, by taking control of our surroundings, it is usually much easier to take control of ourselves.

4. SLEEP

Getting enough sleep is essential. When you start changing your eating habits and exercising, your body needs more rest to restore and rejuvenate. A positive change in diet will cause the body to initially clear out the waste, so coughs, runny noses, feeling cold and feeling more tired than usual can be expected. Try not to turn to medication to suppress cold symptoms, as this will only stuff the junk back down. Try something like honey, lemon and hot water to soothe cold-like symptoms. And rest. It helps the body get rid of this waste and rebuild itself into a stronger and fresher model. Normally, as you progress and your body becomes lighter and clearer, you will begin to need less sleep.

5. EAT MORE!

Yes, you read that right, eat more! I mean frequent, highly nutritious meals and snacks. Don’t skip meals. You will not lose weight by starving yourself, in fact the opposite will happen because the body will start storing. A bowl of fruit and cereal (oats/muesli etc) with low-fat yogurt in the morning, a large portion of vegetables/salad, (no mayo…!) lean protein like lean meat, fish, tofu and porridge (no cheese or butter!), plate whole grain rice with vegetables and lean protein and snacks from our superfood list with a few liters of water a day will help you lose weight in no time. If you can’t stand plain water (preferably bottled or filtered – NOT tap), try squeezing some citrus juice, lemon or orange into it. In fact, a glass of warm water with the juice of half a lemon first thing in the morning is very cleansing and would make a great start to the day. Or even better, a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar in a glass of warm water, mixed with a teaspoon of honey.

Some people have a hard time during the day – take a lunch and a snack with you. Make a rice salad, a thermos of homemade soup, or a meal you can put in the microwave – microwaving food isn’t ideal as it depletes the food of nutrients, but it’s still much better than snacking on sandwiches and crisps…

If you like vegetables, grab some vegetables like carrots, celery, tomatoes and cucumbers and make a dip with low-fat yogurt and chives or cottage cheese.

Experiment and have fun with food, but avoid processed things high in fat and sugar.
