Grandma Shops For Toys For Christmas 2009
Games have always been my love. When I was a little girl, I was thrilled with the mystery and surprise of receiving a new toy. Later with my own children I was able to visit the world of toys again. I even considered owning a toy store.
Christmas is upon us again and many of us are combing the shops, scratching our heads or searching the internet for toys to buy. I now have five wonderful grandchildren. They age from five months to six years. I am excited to look for games for them. For the past two years I have done this search almost exclusively online. I find there is plenty of information about the games available and the prices are great.
For the babies on my list I’m thinking:
Hasbro Playskool Busy Ball Popper – This game was at my granddaughter’s daycare and all the very young children loved it. They loved putting the balls on the spiral track and never seemed to get tired of the balls popping off the top. I’m not sure if any of them understood why the balls were popping, but it made for a lot of laughs and fun.
LeapFrog Learn & Groove Music Table – One of the nice things about this music table is that baby can play with it if it is flat on the floor. Then, when they start to pull themselves up, baby can hold it and press the various activity buttons for sounds and music. I like this game because it is suitable for children from 6 months to 3 years.
Fisher-Price Rainforest Jumperoo – Nothing baby likes more than jumping. Once a baby can hold their head up well, this is a great toy to test those legs without putting weight on them. There are toys around him. Some of them will make sounds when the baby jumps. Others are perfect for catching or hitting. The seat rotates 360 degrees. It is very portable and can be stored easily.
Fisher-Price Amazing Animals Sing and Go Choo-Choo – This is an adorable train. It is suitable for crawling babies. One of the great things about it is that there are no tracks for the train to fall off. The colors of the train and the animals are beautiful. By placing one of the animals on the engine, the baby will get a song. The train lights up, plays music and makes sounds.
For toddlers on my list I consider:
Fisher-Price Go Baby Go! Bounce & Spin Zebra – This comes as either a zebra or a pony. It’s great for toddlers who can climb on it and rock away. It’s low to the ground, so any spills won’t hurt the child. In addition to rocking, the child can spin on it. It helps with balance and the principle of coordination. It’s a fun game.
LeapFrog Fridge Farm Magnetic Animal Set – This magnetic toy can be placed on any metal surface such as the refrigerator at the best height for the baby. Animals are large enough not to be a drowning hazard. At first the baby will enjoy pressing the buttons to activate the sounds. As the baby grows and matures a bit, they will start to match the animal body parts and match the animal with the sounds. Even if they match, they get a silly name for the animal. It’s portable so kids can play with it on the floor away from dinner prep.
Melissa and Doug Deluxe Standing Easel – I think an easel is a necessary part of every child’s life. Once a child can stand and hold a crayon, an easel will allow them hours of entertainment and creativity. This easel is sturdy and allows for painting, chalk, crayons and dry erase.
Fisher-Price Musical Tea – This is a favorite play plate set in pretty pastel colors. What kid doesn’t want to emulate the adults in their life and serve them food? Constructed of durable plastic, it will withstand the occasional tea drop. The teapot is darling and plays ‘I’m a Little Teapot’.
Tonka Toughest Mighty Truck – Kids need trucks in their lives and no one does it better than Tonka. I’m pretty sure we had this same truck when our kids were little. It is durable and can withstand a lot of abuse. We’ve always restricted these larger Tonka toys to outdoors, but they can be used indoors with supervision.
For the four to five year olds on my list I think:
LeapFrog Text and Learn – At this age children want to do what adults do in their lives. With everyone running around with Blackberries and I Phones, this gives this age group their own handheld device. It also allows them to start exploring words and start spelling.
LEGO Duplo 5380 Building Set – Like Tonka, Lego has survived and improved over the decades. It remains a favorite among boys and girls. One of the advantages of buying Lego is that you can add it to a birthday or next Christmas.
Fisher-Price Kid-Tough Digital Camera – Again just like mom and dad kids love to take their own pictures. They don’t worry about composition, they just get distracted. They are excited to have their photos uploaded to the computer along with everyone else’s photos. These cameras are virtually indestructible and quite waterproof. A kindergarten teacher uses them in her classroom and the kids love it.
Baby Alive is learning to do trivia – This doll has the most incredibly attractive blue eyes. He eats, pees and defecates. He also talks and has catchphrases like “ouch, I made a stink” that send kids into fits of giggles. It is possible to introduce it earlier than the age of four when children are self-trained. At a younger age, the child playing with her needs supervision. She is delightful.
Barbie and the Three Musketeers – After 50 years Barbie is still a highly sought after item. The Barbie and the Three Musketeers line of dolls and accessories is this year’s edition. The concept is based on the theory that girls can do anything they want – even become a Musketeer! In addition to the dolls there is a magical castle and carriage. What fairy tale would be complete without them?
For our six to eight year olds, my list includes:
Transformers – These action figures that are also 3D puzzles delight boys who have them. Even little boys who don’t know the comics or the movies have fun with their own adventures. The top sellers are Optimus Prime, Ultimate Bumblebee, Devastator and Megatron.
Bakugan 7 in 1 Maxus Dragonoid – While adults are scratching their heads in wonder, little boys are busy with these marbles. This is an expansion of the Japanese game Bakugan in which warriors face each other. I think the exciting thing about these magnetic warrior marbles is that little boys who don’t know the strategy game can invent their own way to play with them. I like this game as it will last as players get older and more interested in learning the game.
Mindflex game – Without a doubt, this is the #1 selling game this year. Since its introduction earlier this year, it has intrigued gamers looking for something different from mind games. This out-of-future game has players wearing sensors and their abilities to concentrate by controlling the speed of fans on the console. Many customers who have already bought it report increased concentration in their children. Recommended for ages 8 and up.
Nintendo DS Lite – This video game system is perfect for quiet moments and for travel. It seems like there are endless games that can be played on it. It has the ability to connect wirelessly so players can match their skills with others around the world. One of the very popular apps for this handheld device is Mario Kart DS.
LeapFrog Tag Reader System – I see my grandchildren in this age group really interested in learning to read on their own. This is another great product from LeapFrog to help them do that. This system has won many awards for its over 17 learning activities.
These are some of my picks that I think fit the criteria of durability, durability, and fun.
