Street Fighting Moves – How Traditional Martial Arts Discriminate Against Middle Aged Men & Women
Walk into any traditional martial arts dojo and just observe. Notice how many middle aged men and women you see over 50 there. I would venture to say very few. Have you ever wondered why? If you say that martial arts are only for the very young, then how do you explain the fact that most of the teachers who consider themselves teachers are in their 50s and 60s? (By the way, getting into your 50s and 60s to master a martial art usually means you started maybe as a teenager, and since you’re a teacher, you can continue to practice and maintain your skill level by doing hours of practice every day. The average daily man has life and family and cannot devote every waking hour to perfecting a martial art.)
I’m well into middle age, but I have the body, strength, and stamina of a 30-year-old—not by accident, but because I take very good care of myself with progressive weightlifting, regular jogging, and a healthy diet. However, even for a “young” man in my situation, the typical martial arts program is not set up to serve me and my age at all.
I will now reveal to you how and why the traditional martial arts program unwittingly and perhaps unwittingly, but surely, discriminates against the middle-aged man or woman. (For brevity purposes, TMA will stand for Traditional Martial Arts.)
TMA (Karate, Kung Fu, Taekwondo, etc.) Emphasize and glorify “High Kicks” – Because of most of the views and fiction of what is portrayed in movies, high kicks are emphasized and taught. The interesting thing is that for real self-defense, attempting high kicks is dangerously stupid, illogical, and impractical. Trying to kick someone in the face makes about as much sense as bending down to punch someone in the leg. High kicks require excellent hamstring and hip flexibility, which begins to decline rapidly after the age of 40.
TMA teaching systems that take 10, 15 and 20 years to master – Man! Who has that much time to learn and learn how to fight? Certainly not the 50-year-old and above.
So what’s the solution for the middle-aged man or woman who wants to learn self-defense?
My advice is very direct and comprehensive. Forget all the traditional martial arts programs and join one Reality-based self-defense program that de-emphasizes high kicks and extreme leg and hamstring flexibility, and instead of taking years to master, can be taught and learned in a weekend.
