How Do You Know When You’re in Ketosis on Medifast? I’ll Tell You

I often have people email me wanting to know how they can tell if they have reached ketosis or not. Because one of the goals of medifast is to consume low enough carbs and calories and high enough protein that your body burns fat rather than carbs. Most people want to get into this state as soon as possible because that’s when you’ll start seeing results. So how can you tell if you have reached these levels? Well, you can look at your physical symptoms, you can get tested, or you can do both. I will cover this in more detail in the next article.

Physical symptoms you may see in ketosis when you have been on Medifast for more than 3-4 days: First, if you progress very well and are careful with your lean and green foods, you should be able to get into ketosis within the first week. Many people see this sometime around day 3-5. But sometimes it takes a little longer if you practice a lot.

The first thing you may notice is that you have an easier time dieting. Cravings may lessen and you may find that you just aren’t as hungry. You may also find that you have a little more energy. I’ve also heard people say they notice a change in their breathing. They said their breath had an almost fruity, sweet smell and/or taste.

Using the strips to test if you are in ketosis or not: If you are in doubt about these symptoms or just want to make sure that you have finally reached this state, you can use small strips that test for ketones in your urine. These are often sold under names such as ketostix or ketone strips. Basically, you pee on the end of the stick and then wait as long as the instructions say. (This is usually anywhere from 15 to 30 seconds. Results don’t take long.) You’re usually looking for the strips to color. The strips come with directions to show you what color you are looking for. But for many people, you want the strip to turn purple to deep pink, which means you’re in ketosis. You can find the strips at most pharmacies and grocery stores. They are often in the diabetic section. You don’t need a prescription for them, but sometimes they are kept behind the counter depending on the store.

What happens if you don’t see the color change? Well, there are several options. The first would be that you are not yet showing ketones in your urine. You can try again in a few days. Sometimes, if you exercise hard, your muscles will need ketones for fuel, so they won’t be in your urine. You may also have been drinking so much water that your urine is too diluted to change color.

I understand that ketosis is really where you want to be on a medifast and I know we all want confirmation that we are there. But the stripes are really a guide. If you’re seeing some of the symptoms and the weight is coming off as it should, there’s really no reason to take the test results so seriously or get stressed about them. What’s really important is to get the results on the scale, not the strips, although they can help give you some reassurance if you need it.
