The Rapid Fat Loss Handbook Review

Quick Weight Loss Guide by Lyle McDonald has become quite popular on the internet so I decided to do a little review on it and put in my 2 cents. As the title says “The Quick Weight Loss Guide”, you guessed it right if you think the book is about fast weight loss.

The book is very much about crash dieting on the road to weight and fat loss. This can be very unhealthy, physiologically and psychologically, and I’m glad that Lyle warns his readers about this at the beginning of the book. If it weren’t for the fact that he constantly warns against crash dieting as a long term fat loss plan throughout the book, I would find the book dangerously misleading.

His goal with this book is to teach his readers how to crash diet in a way that does not negatively affect the dieter’s health. I like that she discusses the difference between weight loss and fat loss because everyone seems to be hung up on weight loss without realizing that weight loss doesn’t always translate into fat loss. Depending on how this weight is lost, it can consist of lost fat, water, or muscle tissue. And neither of these leads to a more attractive appearance.

The theory behind the book is based on a “protein-sparing modified fast” recommended by surgeons for patients who needed to lose weight quickly before surgery. Surprisingly, the manual contains good advice on how to stick to such a crash diet safely. He recommends not exercising until you’re back to eating normally, and if you haven’t exercised before, he advises you not to start exercising until you’ve finished your diet. These crash diets can be very stressful for the body and because of this strenuous work of any kind is contraindicated.

On numerous occasions, he reminds the reader that crash dieting should be done exactly as described in the book, and that under no circumstances should one crash diet for long periods of time due to the negative health consequences of doing so. Something I found respectable was that he discussed the “rebound” or “yo-yo” effect that these crash diets can have. Most crash diet book authors do not routinely do this.

So many people seem to gain weight soon after they come off these types of diets. In the book, Lyle describes ways to transition back to a more normal eating style while maintaining the fat and weight you’ve lost.

Overall I think it’s a good read, but when it comes down to it. The best weight loss program is one that is sustainable over the long term and that actually allows you to feel good not just about your body, but on the inside as well. The Rapid Fat Loss Handbook is not that program.

Having said that it’s a good read and for the select few who need this kind of resource (athletes who need to gain weight, ladies who want to lose weight before the wedding) and are willing to do it right, it’s a good book.

I must say though, proceed with caution. Most people are interested in a quick fix at the expense of their health. People who don’t exercise in moderation and follow Lyle’s instructions in the Rapid Fat Loss Handbook can find themselves in some sticky waters when it comes to their health.
