I Was Diagnosed With Metabolic Syndrome and Why I Started Eating Keto
Medical medium
I ate Medical Medium for several years and considered myself a pescatarian, eating an exclusively plant-based diet and no dairy, meat, poultry, or eggs.
Diagnosis
6 weeks ago I decided to see herbalist Richard Whelan, I had wanted to see him for years but I don’t think I was ready to face what he might say about my health. My goal was to have my high blood pressure seen in an alternative way and not be diagnosed with high cholesterol for a long time.
Well I was a bit shocked, he did quite a few blood tests, pricked my finger and ran it through the machines and looked at it under a microscope. I listen to my heartbeat and take my blood pressure.
He said he knew as soon as he saw me that I had metabolic syndrome, which is a combination of high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and weight in the midsection that is so stubborn that no matter what you try, it won’t budge. And I tried so many things, as well as exercise. Nothing has moved those numbers.
He said it’s not a matter of if I’ll get diabetes, but when. He thought I was pre-diabetic.
I was speechless, mumbling that I thought I was eating really well and healthy, that I liked refined sugar, but mostly I wasn’t out of control.
So he gave me some liver herbs and some other vitamins and herbs to take, magnesium acetate, chromium, vitamin B complex, St. John’s wort and hawthorn and reishi
Keto
Then he said he wanted me to eat Keto.
I was like “Keto????” what????
I was horrified, I said Keto is what threw my thyroid out 4 years ago because I was low carb.
So he asked me what I was ready to do, I said I was ready to explore. And he was happy about it.
Thyroid and keto
So I got about a week of solid research. He suggested I sign up for dietdoctor.com, which I did.
And I spent a lot of time trying to figure out why keto didn’t throw my thyroid out again like it did.
Then I had to figure out why it happened.
I ate dirty keto. Which is basically just eating all fatty foods like hot dogs and bacon and meat and eggs and no vegetables.
I spent quite a bit of time researching vegan keto and decided it would be too hard.
So I brought in some meat, eggs, and other foods and threw out most of the higher carb items in my cupboards. It was very hard to throw away my old foods that I thought were healthy.
However, I have found that these foods are healthy for some people, just as keto doesn’t work for everyone.
Upset stomach
So I felt pretty good for the first few weeks, got into the keto flu stage as my body adapted, and then I had diarrhea.
I stopped all vitamins and herbs. After 10 days I went back to my old way of eating to see if maybe it was the fat, maybe I changed my diet too quickly instead of adding foods slowly.
I did the food tracker and was about to make an appt with my doc when I came right.
So I’ve been OK for a week and it started again last weekend. I dissected what I was eating and was finally able to figure out what was causing it because if it was fat it would have been shit.
It was sucralose. The sweetener that was in the powerade zero that I used for electrolytes when I was feeling the keto flu. Which was a vicious cycle because I thought I would have to replace the electrolytes because of the diarrhea and then drink more.
Moving forward
I haven’t weighed myself in a few weeks, but I’ve gradually started losing weight and this morning I measured my waist and I lost 15.5 cm in a month.
I really enjoy eating keto. Very filling. I have introduced some dairy but not much. I eat mostly chicken, some meat and eggs. But this time I’m eating a lot more vegetables than last time.
I had my blood work done a few weeks ago and my thyroid is in the range and my liver results are also in the range which I have not seen in the 4 years I have been doing blood work.
I’ll update you on how I’m doing from time to time.
Postscript: 5 months after starting keto I started having anxiety and went for a blood test. Sure enough, what I feared will happen, I am in the early stages of hyperthyroidism, I have increased my carbs and I have an appointment with Richard in early February 2021. I have lost 12 lbs.
