I’m sure you already know this, but there is such a thing as a healthy way and an unhealthy way to lose weight. We want to stay healthy, lose weight and get in the best shape of our lives – Dad likes to hear that; none of this starving to lose weight business. Are you just starting to lose weight and have no idea what you’re doing? We’ve all been there (unless you’ve been blessed with a naturally slim body, in which case I just want to say “we hate you” on behalf of the whole world), but before I get to the differences, I always want to recommend getting a book from an established fitness cat. You want something written by someone who is a trusted source of information!
Okay, so a healthy way to lose weight is a combination of cardio and diet. You eat healthy alternatives to what you’ve eaten in the past, you log the calories you eat each day – you do it for about a week without cardio. Once this week is over and you’ve created a consistent diet plan (this is where quality books come in), you’ll analyze how many calories you need to burn to lose weight (you burn more calories than you take in = how you lose weight) . How many calories you need to burn will determine the intensity of your workout.
The unhealthy way is to starve yourself to lose weight, continue to eat junk food/fast food, not exercise at all, take diet pills or lift weights. That last one might make you think you’re going to calm down a tiger, I’ll get to that. First, starve yourself to lose weight; it’s not a good idea. Your body requires x amount of calories (depends on your weight/fitness) for daily movements; if you’re not taking in those calories, you’re going to feel a crazy loss of energy and life won’t feel very good.
Second, if you continue to eat junk food/fast food, you will not lose weight, period. Instead of sweet chocolate/candy, have a banana or two, maybe an orange; besides the obvious benefits (more potassium in a banana, more vitamin C in an orange) they have just as much sugar as the sweet foods you’re eating right now. If you want a quick snack, make tuna salad sandwiches; I like them and they take no effort/time to make. High in protein and low in carbs – that’s a beautiful thing.
No exercise guarantees any results; you are setting yourself up for failure. As I mentioned earlier, weight loss occurs when you burn more calories than you take in; that’s a ticket. If you’re not burning calories, you’re either meeting the “requirement” that made you overweight, or you’re adding more calories and gaining weight.
Diet pills are a complete waste of money – you won’t even think of spending a penny on them. They recommend that you exercise and eat right while taking them, which will cause you to lose fat, not some pills. You take a pill, exercise/diet, lose weight and automatically assume that the pill did all the work – it wasn’t the pill, it was YOU.
Now for the weight lifting part; a common misconception is that you can gain muscle and burn fat at the same time – wrong! You can only do one at a time, and you guessed it, you start with weight loss, THEN add muscle if you wish. There is no point in building muscle and THEN losing weight; you will lose all the muscle you spent gaining.
