The Benefits of Running to Keep You Fit and Healthy
Running is one of the easiest and most effective ways to keep fit and healthy. We were natural runners as kids because we needed an outlet to burn off all the excess energy kids have.
As we grow up, we tend to lose the habit of running unless someone is chasing us. For many of us, most of our time is spent sitting at a desk and looking at a computer screen. Rather than burning for energy, these excess calories are converted into fat, which is stored around our stomachs, hips and thighs.
If it’s been a while since you last ran, it’s wise to take it easy in the beginning. It is not a good idea to rush into running a mini-marathon as it will do more harm than good. Take it slowly and gradually. If your body is not used to running, the best way to build endurance is to start walking every day. Start with 15 minutes a day and gradually increase your pace until you are walking at a brisk pace for 30 minutes a day. If you can keep this up for 4 weeks, your body will be in better shape to take the extra effort required to run.
I’m not a fan of long distance running. In my opinion, it can do more damage to your body and health in the long run. Constant pounding on your knees and joints and long term strain on your cardiovascular system can actually weaken your body. Recent research has shown that a more effective and safer way to build your strength and endurance is to do short periods of moderate-intensity aerobic exercise, such as running or walking, for 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week. Even light activities around the house, such as running up and down the stairs, gardening or a quick walk with the dog, can have huge positive effects on your health and well-being.
