Heartworm – Common Prevention and Treatment Medication

Heartworm is spread from mosquitoes through bites to animals such as dogs, cats, foxes, wolves, coyotes, other animals, and even people who live near areas with high mosquito populations. Heartworm infection is dangerous; untreated dogs can die and treatment is also risky. Treated dogs experience weeks or months of discomfort while the parasites are killed and expelled from their bodies. The following medications are just some of the medications used in the treatment and prevention of heartworm disease. You should talk to your vet before using any medication as your dog’s life may be at stake. Moxidectin, sold under the brand name ProHeart, is an injectable parasiticide used in treatment for the prevention and control of heartworms and intestinal worms.

Moxidectin should be administered within one month of a dog’s exposure and prevents infection for six months after administration. After these months, if the dog responds well to the drug, it can be given every six months for permanent protection against heartworm disease. The following side effects may occur: anaphylaxis, vomiting, diarrhea (with and without blood), lethargy, weight loss, seizures and high body temperature. If your dog is already infected with heartworm side effects such as vomiting, lethargy and bloody diarrhea may occur. Ivermectin can also be found under the trade names Tri-Heart Plus, Heartgard, Ivomec, Heartgard Plus, or Iverhart Max. All of these medications contain ivermectin and pyrantel. Iverhart Max also contains praziquantel. In dogs, Ivermectin is used as a preventive medicine for heartworm disease, but it is also effective in removing heartworm larvae in active heartworm infection. Ivermectin can only be obtained from your veterinarian or with a prescription from a veterinarian. You should strictly follow the dosage instructions provided by your veterinarian when administering this medication to your dog. It is usually prescribed for use during the mosquito season and 1 month after it. The drug kills the parasites acquired a month ago. Side effects should not occur if the drug is administered in low doses. A higher dose of Ivermectin can be given as a treatment for skin mites. Some dog breeds, such as Collies, Shetland Sheepdogs, Australian Shepherds, and Old English Sheepdogs, may require a blood test before using Ivermectin because these breeds are hypersensitive and genetically susceptible to this drug. If your dog is one of these breeds and has been given Ivermectin, you should supervise your pet for the next 8 hours after using the drug. If you notice weakness, staggering, dilated pupils or tremors, you should contact your vet immediately.

Melarsomine dihydrochloride, sold under the brand name Immiticide, is used to treat heartworm disease. It is available as a powder that is mixed with sterile water before use and kills juvenile and adult heartworms in dogs. It is administered by deep intramuscular injection into the lumbar back muscle twice in 48 hours depending on the severity of the case. Imiticide is contraindicated in dogs with very severe heartworm disease until the heartworms are surgically removed. After administration of the drug, irritation at the injection site was observed. Other side effects that may occur are swelling, tenderness and reluctance to move, cough, retching, depression, lethargy, lack of appetite, fever, lung congestion and vomiting. Solid nodules can persist indefinitely. Even after the worms die, the dog may still suffer from a cough, fever or weakness. The owner must keep the dog still in the cage for the next 4-6 weeks or the dog may suffer a pulmonary embolism. A repeat test must be done 4 months after treatment and then, if everything is clear, you should start heartworm preventive treatment.
