Overcoming The Yummy-Mummy Syndrome

You are a new mother – congratulations!

From what I’ve heard, been told and seen, having a baby is a life changing experience with lots of multitasking responsibilities. But with long nights and days, endless feeds, very little sleep and nappy changes in between – there are also many priceless moments and milestones along the way.

With our celebrity-obsessed society comes a dark side. The term yum mummy entered the scene and whoever coined the terminology put a lot of pressure on women to be just that!

I couldn’t think of anything worse than feeling the pressure to lose weight after giving birth and look like you have it all together. Unless you’ve been genetically blessed like Gisele Bundchen or Heidi Klum, who graced the catwalk weeks after giving birth, then it can be a tall order for your body to “bounce back” to your previous weight. Not only that, celebrities also have a helping hand with their daily chores and somehow miraculously rebuild their bodies and image after giving birth, allowing them to look polished when they step out again.

Can you imagine the sheer delight of the millions of women who would have breathed a sigh of relief when Jessica Alba recently announced that her “… breasts are saggy, I have cellulite, my hips are bigger… every actress out there is more beautiful than me.” Oh , I think I just heard everyone groan and roll their eyes.

I haven’t been in the latter’s position – but I feel like I am after listening to friends and colleagues talk about the rude awakening of life after having a baby. Some have a personal trainer on speed dial, others have made counting calories look like a religion. Kudos to those moms who let Mother Nature take her course and allow their bodies to return to what they were or take on their new form.

But one might also argue that the last thing on a new mom’s agenda is being body-conscious when they should be spending their waking hours with their baby. The great news is that you can take some time to regroup, even if a few hours of “Me” time resonates with some form of guilt.

Here are some styling and transitional wardrobe tips collected from some great moms I spoke to. You will definitely have time to treat yourself to coffee, cake and a magazine with them! Remember, every body is beautiful.

1. Keep your makeup simple: tinted moisturizer can be applied on the go and, unlike foundation, doesn’t need to be applied perfectly. This will give you the color and glow you need when you’re in a hurry.

2. Tinted lip gloss: you don’t need a mirror to apply it. Alternatively, use red lipstick for instant confidence.

3. Keep your nails short and your polish neutral – you’ll always look groomed.

4. Printed tops will hide any stains and choose materials that do not require ironing. To create a longer silhouette, choose a tunic style. Add a pair of leggings and flats for a comfortable yet chic daytime look.

5. Shaped underwear: for instant confidence and a smooth surface under clothes.

6. Are you having a bad day? Why not dress up your hair and add some glittery accessories from barrettes to hair ties.

7. Go in comfortable clothes and don’t try to fit into old clothes – it will only make you feel worse. These will give you the added bump you want to camouflage.

8. Comfortable Shoes – Unless you’re a famous mom and want to make sure you look great for the paparazzi, pushing a stroller in heels can be a little uncomfortable (unless you’re Sarah Jessica Parker, of course).

9. Dry shampoo saves lives and is great for in-between washes.

10. Dark sun for those long nights you’ve stayed up to hide your under-eye bags.

11. Tint your lashes so you never have to worry about reapplying mascara. You’ll be ready to go at any time.

12. Keep haircuts simple. Find a great tailored jacket to wear with jeans for an instantly polished look.

13. splurge on something nice; you don’t have to buy only things for the baby. Invest in a gorgeous bag that’s big enough for mom’s stuff – diapers and all!

14. Last but not least, go out with the girls!

And more good news, the better you feel, the better you will be with your loved ones who will love you for it. Now that’s what I call a happy mom!
