Shaolin Kung Fu Secret Fighting Exercises: Windlass or Bucket-Lifting Arts
The 72 Consummate and Secret Arts of the Shaolin Temple is a collection of interrelated martial exercises that fall into several key categories. The following example, ‘Windlass Arts’, is a hard exercise with an external force. Details of training intensity and duration are complemented by descriptions of the simple, basic, but highly effective traditional training aids needed to develop these key skills.
Shaolin Temple Secret Arts are also known as “Kungs” or “Martial Exercises” which involve extreme training but can produce stunning results. As an example, the “Windlass Arts” program is described, which develops arm, hand and finger strength. In fact, there are several more than 72 secret arts of the Shaolin Temple. Different authorities have produced different lists, equally authentic, though with overlapping common content. Yang/Yin, Gang/Rou and Internal/External are the descriptors used to classify these martial exercises or “Kungs”.
‘Kungs’ mostly involve either the soft training of ‘Yin Rou Energy’ (mainly internal) or the hard training of ‘Yang Gang Power’ (mainly external), although some involve both.
Windlass Arts (sometimes known as Windlass Arts)
This is a Yang Gang Hard External Power Training exercise focusing on developing hand and arm strength.
Technical analysis
The reel/bucket arrangement in various forms has regularly been used as a tool or training aid to enhance martial development, from the two water buckets carried by Shaolin Novices to various film scenes where someone endlessly lifts water at this stage of training. from the well.
This exercise is usually performed in horse stance (Ma Bu) with both arms extended at chest height, knuckles up. Sometimes an elevated place is used for the exercise, such as a balcony or above the stairs, because the additional effort associated with using a longer rope increases the results substantially.
Method
Use either a household bucket, a sturdy non-porous sack, or loose gym-type weight plates and attach or string them to about four feet (120 cm) of rope. Tie it firmly to the center of a wooden stick about 60 cm long and about 5 cm in diameter to prevent it from “slipping”.
With a 1/2 kilo (1 pound) weight attached, it is wound clockwise up and counterclockwise thirty times, twice a day, for one month. Each subsequent month an additional 1/4 kilo (half a pound) is added for the next five months. Thereafter, 1/2 kilogram (1 pound) is added every three months until maximum capacity is reached.
Overall
There was a need to convert from traditional Chinese (eg Catties and Taels) to modern imperial and metric measurement systems for the convenience of non-Chinese speakers around the world. In addition, the original measurements were based on a Malaysian cat weighing approximately 20% more than its Chinese equivalent – the above figures should therefore always be considered approximate.
