The Perfect Baseball Hitting Drill?
The hallmark of a good baseball batting practice is one that enforces proper hitting fundamentals and that over time causes proper hitting action when the hitter goes without the drill. With that in mind, some exercises are obviously better than others. The drill below does just that. It forces the right action and works on all the important fundamentals of hitting, such as staying back, compact swing, weight shift, hip opening and follow-up.
Because this drill combines all the proper fundamentals of baseball hitting into one drill, it makes hitting easier and faster when done correctly. It’s a bit complicated and requires some percussive tools that you don’t usually have in your basement or backyard. However, local batting cages will have the necessary items – balls, protective screen, batting cage.
Here is the perfect baseball batting practice:
1. The hitter stands very close (within six to 10 inches) of the net facing the pitcher, with the net behind the batter where the catcher is standing. The back foot and hands of the hitters should be this distance from the back net. Make sure home plate is set and players are standing a normal distance from the board.
2. The coach stands behind a protective screen with a bucket of balls in front of the player, starting twelve to fifteen feet away.
3. The coach tosses balls to the outside half of the plate – solid underhand tosses are best from this distance, trying to keep the ball level without rising or falling on the overturned ball.
The result you are looking for? Since the ball is on the outside half of the plate, hitters should drive the ball into the opposite field by missing the net on the initial part of the swing but hitting the net on the follow through.
Note: Attackers can brush off the net on their way forward and when stretching they can come up a bit short of hitting the net and that’s acceptable.
Why is this the perfect baseball batting practice?
1. One of the main fundamentals of hitting is “stay back” – if the attacker jumps forward (lunges or skips), he will not be able to hit the net on the subsequent pass.
2. Another goal for hitters is to have a compact swing – when the hitter is long, anyway (upper chop, toss, back drop) hits the net on the initial part of the swing.
3. Another goal of a good swing is to have the hands in the power position (palm up, palm down) at contact. By hitting the ball to the opposite field on this outfield, this drill will ensure that the hitter is in this correct contact position.
4. Another part of a perfect baseball swing is that the batters weight is transferred as their hips open – missing the net on the way forward will promote weight transfer and the only way to hit or get close to the net on the follow through. , is to open the hips.
5. Another ingredient of good batting is that hitters watch the ball; hence the reason for working on the outer pitch. It is further recommended that batters keep their eyes in the direction the ball is being hit while trying to hit the net as hard as possible.
Once hitters begin to perform the drill with some consistency (frequent line drives with back-spin to the opposite field), the coach can begin to back off until he eventually performs the drill out of regulation, hitting distance.
Is the drill the perfect drill? Maybe not, but if done right, it works on all the essential punching bases at once. Finally, I’m sure I wasn’t the first to discover this drill, but it’s one of my all-time favorites for teaching hitting over the past twenty-two years.
