What Makes Oakley Prescription Glasses Better Than The Competition?

Superior adhesion

It all started with motocross grips. Oakley discovered a material that actually increased grip when wet. In a motocross race, it proved to be incredibly useful property. After moving on to improve eyewear technology, Oakley used what they learned to make sunglasses. Eventually they switched to prescription glasses. Oakley named the material Unobtainium (reportedly because of the number of waterproof patents they hold on the material).

In the optical design, they used Unobtainium on the sleeves of their glasses. This meant that when a person sweated, their glasses would grip tighter.

With this extra grip they had over their competitors, Oakley was able to use another technology: Three Point Fit. This has to do with how the glasses sit on the face and create only three points of contact (the nose and one on each side of the head). This eliminates the need for curved stems that can uncomfortably wrap around the back of the ear.

Exotic materials

Oakley Prescription frames can be made from a variety of materials depending on the desired features. Titanium is characterized by distinctive features, especially in their higher-end models. This is due to the high strength-to-weight ratio as well as excellent elasticity. Oakley also developed their own alloy called C5 Alloy. It is made up of five different metals and is meant to mimic the light and high strength properties of titanium. Where the style calls for it, Oakley uses two other materials to construct the frame: acetate and ‘O Matter’. The O Matter is billed as one of Oakley’s own creations, but it’s actually just high-strength polycarbonate (albeit from the highest quality manufacturer possible). Acetate is typically used on certain Lifestyle glasses as it allows heat molding to fit.

Of course, Oakley put everything they learned from sunglass lenses into their prescription lenses. Their impact protection conforms to ANSI Z87.1, the American standard for optical impact protection. To test this, they conduct two controlled trials. The first is dropping a 500g steel tip onto the lens from a height of just over four feet. It then fires the ball bearing directly at the lens at 102 mph. These tests are designed to simulate real impacts. Examples include rocks flying off the road while cycling or being hit by a cricket ball. In order for the glass to pass, it must not break and no material can come into contact with the “eye”.
