How to improve my vertical jump – many have asked the same question. This task is made much more difficult by all the bad information on the subject. If you’re not careful, you can waste some time doing “vertical jump drills” that don’t work.

So how do you “get the hops”?

The KEY is to get stronger muscles. No one will deny that. But the important thing is not just to get “stronger muscles”, but to strengthen the RIGHT muscles.

All “vertical jump” programs will help you get stronger… but most of them strengthen the wrong muscles.

What does it mean?

Your body is made up of “fast” and “slow” twitch muscles. Fast twitches are responsible for quick and explosive movements such as dunks and sprints.

They are only able to work for up to 8 seconds – and no one can maintain their “peak” performance for longer than that.

Then your slow muscle twitches kick in. These are the muscles that are responsible for long distance activities…like walking…jogging…mountain climbing etc.

The difference between the 2 is HUGE

If you want to improve your vertical jump, you need to strengthen your fast twitch muscles. Strengthening your slow twitch muscles will do nothing for your ability to jump.

So how do you get stronger fast muscles?

By giving 100% for each set. Your fast twitch muscles only work when you are challenged to peak athletic performance… so if you give anything less than 100% and you are just training your slow twitch muscles.

When you feel your performance starting to decline you know your slow twitch muscles are kicking.

Therefore, it is necessary to stop the set IMMEDIATELY. 5-8 reps is usually the ideal number for maximum intensity on each rep.

And it doesn’t JUST apply to “plyos”…

The same works with weight training. When you lift weights at anything less than FULL SPEED, you are only strengthening your slow twitch muscles. This is why “training to failure” is completely ineffective for becoming explosive.

So what is the answer to the original question – how to improve your vertical jump? Going all out on every set is the ONLY WAY.
