Back Pain and Weight
Today I will discuss the most common, non-fatal, medical diagnosis of low back pain. More money is spent on lower back pain than diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol to name a few. Today’s question is; does your weight affect whether your back hurts or not?
The answer is yes, it can hurt your back. Many other things can cause back pain. You could sprain your back from injury, arthritis, ruptured disc, osteoporosis, and many other conditions. Before we discuss how your weight can hurt your lower back, we need a quick anatomy lesson.
The neck and back have a loroditic curvature; which means bend back and resembles a backwards “C.” The mid-back bends forward and has a kyphotic curve and most closely resembles an anterior “C”. The back and spinal muscles are more important than the muscles of the mid back in maintaining the structural integrity of the neck and lower back. This is why car accident injuries always involve the neck and lower back.
So where does the weight fit in? For most obese people, the belly gains weight, it becomes fat, and this puts additional strain on the lower back. The added front weight throws off your body’s center of gravity and makes your back muscles work harder than they should. Need proof? Go to the store and pick up a 20lb bag of dog food and walk up and down the isle. Better yet, ask any 8-9 month pregnant woman; “does your back hurt?”
Finally, very few people specifically train their core muscles, let alone try to isolate the muscles of the lower spine. If you don’t exercise them, they become weaker and more prone to injury. Even a minor back injury or overworked muscles can cause a muscle in your lower back to scream in pain. Mild pain can be treated with over-the-counter analgesics such as ibuprofen. More severe back pain is starting to add up to medical expenses. In addition to medication, we have physical therapy, x-rays, MRIs, surgery, not to mention hospitalization and time off.
Imagine you just lost one 20lb bag of “dog food”. You would have less back pain and you would have more energy and be more active. Losing abdominal weight puts less strain on the muscles of the lower back and they, in turn, do not cause pain.
