How to Attain Your New Years Resolutions

Another year has passed and you’re still struggling with your weight. Most people don’t even bother making New Year’s resolutions anymore because they’re afraid they’ll fail again. If you’ve been making resolutions year after year and you’re not keeping them, please read on. I faced the same frustration of failure year after year and learned a lot from my experiences. A new decade is about to begin, so make this the year to finally reach your weight loss goals and become a new healthy you. Here are some suggestions that have helped me achieve my weight loss goals.

Mind Set and Motivation: To achieve any goal you need to have a great mind set and motivation. Think about and write down some reasons that are really important to you and that would help you decide to do something about your health this year. Maybe you are tired of being tired. Maybe you’d like to run a marathon someday. Maybe it’s because your doctor gave you some scary news that would get better if you lost weight. It could be stopping all blood pressure and cholesterol medications. Another reason could be because you have more energy to play with the kids in your life or even just to look good in that cute little black dress you wore years ago. Whatever it is, think of it or them and write them down. Now that you’ve written them down, make copies and post them around the house so you can constantly remind yourself of your reasons to lose weight. Seeing these reminders daily will help you remember why you are healthier when the going gets tough.

Goal setting: Setting realistic goals is essential. There are long-term goals and short-term goals. First, set your long-term goals. My long term goal was to lose 50 points in 6 months. I felt this was a good timeline for me because if I lost ten pounds in a month I would be happy. Make a specific date and write it in your calendar.

Now for short term goals. Set daily and weekly goals. A daily goal might be to get in some form of exercise or even make sure you don’t eat right before bed. A weekly goal could be to lose 1-5 pounds. You can make a mental note of your daily goals or write them down if you write notes. Write down your weekly goals in your planner or calendar. Find what works for you and make your goals achievable. Make them challenging but something you can achieve.

Find an exercise and diet program: It is very important to have an exercise program that you will do. If you’ve always wanted to dance, there are many dance cardio DVDs that you can watch. There may be a certain sport that you loved as a child that you could get back into. Swimming is always a great exercise to do with the family. There are many great programs available from fitness experts around the world that you can do in the comfort of your own home and fit into your schedule. I find that you get better bang for your buck with home exercise programs that come in DVD format because not only do they give you an exercise routine to follow, they almost always come with a meal plan as well. When choosing a program, make sure you know how much time it will take per day and whether it will fit into your schedule.

Don’t stick to fad diets: Fad diets won’t get you to your goals. Diet pills won’t get you there either. Diet pills help curb cravings, boost metabolism, and give you energy, but you’ll need to change your lifestyle to lose weight. Dieting doesn’t work. Eating healthy and not starving yes. Fad diets are usually hard to stick to because they are so restrictive or force you to eat soup all day. Who can live on soup all day? Find a meal plan that provides all the food groups daily and use portion control.

Take it one day at a time. Even a minute at a time or one hour at a time. If you have a bad day, start over. If you are faced with a situation and are tempted to eat something you know you shouldn’t, just have a small amount. Relax and have fun, you are doing something really good for yourself and you should be proud of your small achievements every day. If you mess up, go straight back into the game.

By taking these suggestions to heart and actually doing them, you have nothing to lose but your weight. Make this year your year and start this new decade of living a healthy life that will lead you to your weight loss goals.
