Testing Tim Ferriss’ Ideas

In Tim Ferriss’ recent book “The 4 Hour Body” he tests a number of different proven “diet myths” and literally pushes your body to its limits. He’s basically a human guinea pig. In one such test, he tries to consume 5,000 calories a day to quickly gain weight and muscle mass. He looks like the Hulk in 6 weeks. The transformation is truly stunning.

His book includes a variety of different exercises that people can try depending on their goals. One such example is called Occam’s protocol. This exercise promises a significant increase in muscle mass, while you will not spend more than 4 hours a month in the gym. Too good to believe? Here it works…

There are only 4 different exercises you have to do. The strength of the exercises is based on using a 5/5 cadence where you push for 5 seconds and gently lower for another 5 seconds. There are no rests, no sets or reps. Just keep doing this cadence until your muscles fail. Once they fail, continue with the last press for 10 seconds. It hurts, but therein lies the advantage.

As your body repairs itself over the next few days, you actually continue to burn calories. This is where weight loss begins. As your body tries to repair itself, it burns calories to do so. A side effect is that you lose weight naturally. The time between training sessions is crucial. It will be 3 days initially to give your body time to heal itself. Timing is important because it maximizes this calorie burn.

As part of this workout, and in order to build muscle quickly, Ferriss recommends a low-carb, high-protein diet. This is to use up your carbohydrate and fat stores, allowing you to lose weight while eating protein to allow muscle growth and repair.

And it works. In several of the case studies he publishes in his book, which can now be found online, the results are remarkable. In fact, the biggest problem he advocates for most people on this diet is that they are not eating enough to support massive muscle growth. Isn’t that a bad problem?
