I have described one answer in this article. Here I will describe another answer. And I will describe it using an example from health, which everyone who takes care of their health can easily relate to. Let’s say you’ve decided to lose weight. You started eating well, exercising, getting enough sleep, and journaling your accomplishments. Visually marking your progress would motivate you and give you a way to measure progress. You may have ticked off every single thing for the day. You did well for a few days and even began to like all the uninterrupted ticks on your calendar. And you began to notice the effects of progress. So you successfully ticked away for a few more days… which turned into weeks… And you started to feel a rush of energy, lighter on your feet, smaller in your body, slimmer in the mirror…
… and then there came a point where you thought, ‘I’m doing so well too good for yourself so I can afford a treat. You’ve stopped climbing and maybe slipped back into some of the old things you did before you started slimming down. The moment you decided to quit, you may have felt like “I do almost too well for me’.
Why does the new one feel weird?
And here we come to the answer. The feeling that we are doing too well for ourselves takes us out of our comfort zone. And that is never comfortable for us human beings. So we stop by going back to the old ways of touching base with our comfort zone. The familiar is comfortable. Outside of our comfort zone, we doubt: “This can’t be true, I can’t do it this well” and we don’t recognize ourselves… “Who am I (becoming)?”, we may ask, because we feel that it is not us!
Make it the new norm
NLP’s way of moving us to a higher level is to make the state of doing too well for ourselves the norm. Making it the norm means practicing until it becomes the norm. Exercising = pretending the condition is far too good Yippee standard. Once we accept the pretense that this state is the norm, we will feel more comfortable doing “too well.” So we can easily last longer. Even after a few days, the feeling that we are doing too well will disappear, because we have practiced seeing it as the norm.
Of course we should treat ourselves, but maybe differently or more healthily than we did in the old ways. And right after treatment, we should go back to pretending that what used to do us too much good days ago is now the norm. A week goes by and the ticks on the calendar keep piling up. You will like the ticks, yourself for winning over yourself and your burst of energy even more. So you’ll make it through the next few days… which turn into weeks… And after a month you’ll be well set on the new plan. Some say it takes 28 days to form a habit…
… and comply with the new standard
After another 2 months, if you persevere, the “new” level will become the norm and your body will even demand this norm. Your old ways of “behaving” will become uncomfortable and foreign to you, and this will be a sure test that your “new” norm is now firmly in place. The rewards will be huge, be it weight loss or anything else in any aspect of life.
