Bike Rollers Will Help You To Lose Weight By Exercising

I never realized how much fun losing weight could be until I started using them. I admit that I tend to go “bear” in the winter months; in other words, I usually like to sleep a lot and act lazy. The summer months, on the other hand, are completely different. I will go on long bike rides and try to shut off the world’s problems.

A friend of mine recently recommended a device I could use that would allow me to cycle indoors, adding that “it’s not the type of stationary bike you might be thinking about”. OK, I was intrigued to say the least, so I looked up what “rollers” were and found that they could be used as a new way to lose weight through exercise.

Cylinders 101

So I did a bit of research on what rollers were and to be honest they looked really pretty simple. There are different types available, but they all do the same thing. The unit comes with 3 drums (usually PVC or aluminium), two of which are located between the rear tire and then the third which is used to drive the front wheel. The rear drums (ie rollers) are attached to the front by some type of belt.

What do you do with them?

The idea behind the rollers is that by pedaling, you drive the rear tire, which is in contact with the rear rollers, which are in contact with the font rollers, which in turn turn the front tire. Trust me, it’s more complicated to explain than to actually just use them. Since your front tire is spinning, you are now in control of your bike and can literally ride as if you were on the road.

Hard at first

The hardest part about using rollers is actually getting on the bike and then starting to pedal. There are hundreds of videos online showing “newbie” roller users trying to start up and get their balance. They make great videos because they usually involve some kind of crash; funny but not that dangerous. If you go off the rollers, your tires will stop immediately and the rider will tend to just roll over (unlike the road – Ouch!).

Pretend You’re On The Road

If you can ride a bike, you can ride these. My suggestion for a first start is to place it between a door or next to something you can grab onto for balance purposes. Get on the bike and then sit on it, using the wall (or whatever you use for balance) to keep yourself upright. Place your feet on the pedals and place one hand on the front bars and hold on with the other. Now the fun begins.

Start pedaling slowly, concentrating on keeping the front wheel as straight as possible.

The faster you pedal, the easier it will be to keep your balance (on anything but the road). Now slowly remove the other hand from the wall and place it on the bars. Now you are riding on rollers.

When driving, try to focus your attention in front of you and don’t look down too much. I find that looking ahead gives you much better balance than constantly looking at how your wheels are doing. As your balance improves, you should experiment with shifting and notice how speed affects your balance while driving. When you get really good, you can even stand up from your seat and try pedaling as if you were going uphill.

Your cycling skills will improve immensely

If you regularly ride roller skates during the winter, you’ll be surprised how much easier driving on the road actually is. Besides being fun, riding them is also a great way to lose weight through exercise. I know it has worked wonders for me.
