There are many underweight people who want to get to a healthier weight by gaining a few pounds so that they are not so skinny. Many times there are unsafe practices used to gain extra weight, which in the long run will not leave you as a healthy person. If you want to gain weight, avoid these tactics.

The most common strategy for most underweight people is to eat as much junk food as possible. It makes sense because the food is cheap and very high in calories. If you eat a high calorie diet for long enough, eventually that extra energy turns into fat which will make you look a little bigger.

But the goal is not only to gain weight but to have a healthy weight. If you eat this junk food, there are various problems that can occur.

The first is trans fat. These damage nutrition at the cellular level. Many times this is found in fried foods and even in some sweets. In the long run, consuming trans fats is unhealthy as it disrupts cellular nutrition. Although this food will help you gain some weight, it is not worth the risk to your health.

Another big issue is sodium intake. If you eat junk food, you can sometimes end up with high sodium levels. This in addition to not exercising enough can lead to higher blood pressure which can cause a variety of medical problems.

Another huge mistake is not doing any exercise. The logic is that if you don’t move much, you won’t burn as many calories. While this may make sense for weight gain, it is not healthy. You should do regular exercise for overall health. As an underweight person, by not exercising, you can lose weight, as you can lose the muscle you already have. This is a step backwards, as much of the weight gain you’ll see is likely to be muscle versus fat for your body type.

Whatever you do, make sure the strategy is safe and won’t make you less healthy in the long run.
