Marines Requirements – Weight For Male Recruits

So you’ve been thinking about joining the US Marine Corps and you’ve been wondering about the requirements of the Marine Corps and whether your weight might be the reason you won’t be accepted. Before we jump into that, let’s first briefly discuss what exactly the United States Marine Corps or USMC is. It is a branch of the United States Armed Forces that is responsible for providing power projections from the sea and uses the United States Navy to rapidly deliver combined arms task forces. To keep it simple, Marines are also known as “Navy Infantry”. They are experts in amphibious operations.

The Navy requirement or body fat limit for male recruits is 18%. You can learn more about this topic in Marine Corps Order 6100.12. Before entering basic training, recruits are required to meet various weight standards, also known as “Retention Weight Standards”. If you don’t meet the strict standards, don’t give up because you can still be in basic training if the following conditions are met:

1.) Your weight is within 5 percent of current weight maintenance standards. You can then go to basic training without having to sign a waiver if you pass the IST.

2.) Your weight is more than 5 percent of the retention weight standard, but you were able to pass the IST and get a waiver from the Marine Corps Recruiting District Commander.

3.) Your weight is more than 10 percent above the retention weight, but you have met the IST, meet the body fat standards (18%), and received a waiver from the Commandant of the Marine Corps Recruiting Area.

There is a specific minimum and maximum weight requirement for each height, weight and age, so you better check this now before you even try to apply and talk to a recruiter. You may want to reach your goal weight so you don’t have to think about the 3 conditions above.
