How to Eat Popcorn After Weight Loss Surgery
When it comes to foods that cause weight regain, for weight loss surgery patients, popcorn is one of the worst offenders. By all accounts it is a “healthy” snack with a high fiber content. However, for many gastric patients, popcorn becomes the king of foods that lead to digestive upset, dumping syndrome and ultimately weight gain. Many bariatric centers advise patients to remove popcorn from their diet, firstly because it is a starchy carbohydrate snack and secondly because eating it returns the patient to the mindless snacking habit that contributed to the morbid obesity before surgery.
When a patient with gastric bypass, gastric band, or gastric sleeve weight loss surgery is forced to eat popcorn, they should follow these dietary guidelines provided by most weight loss surgery centers. Applying these guidelines is not radical or artificial, it follows the rules we agreed to when we signed up for gastric surgery.
- Measure out a 1-cup serving for your meal or snack. Do not butter, salt or pepper the popcorn. Air popped is preferred.
- Stop drinking liquids 30 minutes before and 30 minutes after enjoying 1 cup of popcorn.
- Do not drink liquids while eating 1 cup of popcorn.
- Do not exceed a 1 cup popcorn serving.
- If you chose to eat anything else with your popcorn meal/snack, you must reduce the volume of popcorn by the volume of the other food you will eat so that the total volume of food is 1 cup.
Nutrition per serving: 1 cup of lightly buttered popcorn has 82 calories. 1g Protein? 6g fat? 6 g of carbohydrates. It’s 1/2 starch/bread swap and 1 fat swap.
Many patients who eat popcorn following these instructions report an unpleasant experience: their pouch feels tight and stuck because the popcorn is sitting there. With no liquids to wash it down (and make it slide food) and with our limited gastric enzymes and digestive juices, it takes a long time to digest “dry” popcorn in the pouch. In addition, we experience dry mouth, bad breath and thirst. This is your pouch doing its job: You’re supposed to feel uncomfortable when you follow directions and eat something that appears on most “avoid these foods” lists provided by bariatric centers. Thank your pouch for a job well done and accept the message it tells you.
If we ignore the directions and eat popcorn while drinking a beverage, our portion sizes are often not measured and we switch to grazing-style eating. This is a problem with popcorn because popcorn is a high glycemic index food and raises our blood sugar. If the drinks we consume with it also increase our glycemic load, we are at risk of dumping syndrome. Most commonly we find people suffering from “low-grade dumping” where their blood sugar is elevated to the point of dizziness or “feeling” but not enough to manifest the signs of full-on dumping. Soon this “distanced” state begins to feel normal and can only be maintained by snacking or grazing on similar simple carbohydrates such as pretzels and crackers.
I’ve reached into the tub of popcorn several times since my weight loss surgery. It’s so delicious and so tempting and seemingly such a smart healthy choice. I understand. But, alas, I’ve answered hundreds of emails, phone calls, and consultations with patients struggling with a weight gain that started innocently enough with one hand in the healthy snack bowl full of popcorn.
