More than 38,000 players from 40 countries representing FIFpro took part in the vote, with 55 players included in the end. After a night of great entertainment, including awards for Ronaldinho (World Player of the Year), Wayne Rooney (Young Player of the Year) and Cristiano Ronaldo (Young Player of the Year as voted by fans), the World XI was announced as:

Capped over 60 times for his country Nesta is a typical Italian defender, difficult to pass and comfortable on the ball. DF- GABRIEL HEINZE (Argentina/Manchester United): A £6.9m signing from PSG, Heinze has won over fans and pundits alike with his tough tackling and 100% commitment to the team. The United Fans’ Player of the Year’s recovery from a nasty injury against Villarreal sees the left-back out for the rest of the season, a huge blow for Alex Ferguson’s side.

MF- RONALDINHO (Brazil/Barcelona): The third player voted in both the FIFpro and Bootroom World XI. What can be said about Ronaldo de Assis Moreira that has not been said? A €27m signing from PSG, the diminutive Brazilian has fooled the best defenses in La Liga and on the international stage. Ronaldinho can sit the FIFpro World Player of the Year award alongside his FIFA World Player of the Year award and his La Liga Championship medal, both won last year.

MF- STEVEN GERRARD (England/Liverpool): Gerrard helped Liverpool lift their fifth European Cup with an inspired display in Istanbul last season and was named in the World XI as a result. With almost 300 games to his name for Liverpool, Gerrard has won the League Cup (twice), FA Cup and UEFA Cup in his seven years in the first team. A driving force for Liverpool, when Gerrard is at the top of his game he is pretty much unstoppable.

MF- FRANK LAMPARD (England/Chelsea): Fourth player to feature in both FIFpro and Bootroom World XI. Winner of Football Writers’ Association Footballer of the Year, Barkley’s Player of the Year and PFA Website Fans’ Player of the Year just goes to show what kind of season Frank Lampard Jnr has had. An £11m signing from West Ham, many fans and pundits were baffled as to why Chelsea were so rejected for an overweight and overrated player. But four years in Lampard has seen him become an established part of the team scoring important goals from midfield.

MF- KAKA (Brazil/Ac Milan): The 23-year-old has really shone this season with a brilliant first-half display against Liverpool in the Champions’ League final. Signing from São Paulo FC in 2003, Ricardo Izecson dos Santos Leite scored 10 goals in 30 appearances as he won the Italian Serie A and the European Super Cup in his first season. Kaka’s best position is right behind the striker, where his killer pass and late arrival into the box quickly became his trademark.

FC- ADRIANO (Brazil/Inter Milan): A must-sign for all Football Manager players, Adriano Leite Ribeiro showed just how attacking he is with an impressive 15 goals in 16 appearances last season. A strong and highly skilled striker who looks like he’s been around for years, Adriano is still only 23 and has an incredible future ahead of him

FC- ANDREI SHEVCHENKO: (Ukraine/Milan): Last player selected in both FIFpro and Bootroom World XI. Signed for $26 million from Dynamo Kyiv, Shevchenko will go down as one of the greatest strikers to ever win Serie A. In December 2004, Shevchenko was named European Footballer of the Year after scoring the winning penalty against Juventus in the Champions Final League in 2003. Shevchenko can score goals with either foot, has excellent close control and pace that often leaves defenders dead.
