Positive Changes Achieved by Exercising Mind, Body & Spirit

My story explains the challenges I faced as a 23-year-old single, divorced mother of three children, ages six, four, and one, and then shows some practical ways I changed my life and reclaimed my personal power. Self-pity, anger, guilt, and self-hatred were my constant emotional companions. I suffered physically, mentally and spiritually. In 1980, I was making $80 a week, receiving sporadic child support payments of $300 a month, and living in fear that we wouldn’t survive. I feared for my life and was constantly worried. I smoked, ate junk food, didn’t exercise and spent endless hours watching TV. My mind was constantly focused on what everyone else in my life would need to change in order for me to be happy. Because I couldn’t change anyone else, I thought I was a hopeless failure and couldn’t do anything right.

With Alanon’s help and guidance I realized I had a choice and it was me who needed a change. I was listening to my own soliloquy. It was negative. I replaced my “I’m stupid” self-talk with “I’m learning” and “I’m worthless” with “I’m good enough.”

One goal I had was to quit smoking. Studies showed the negative effects of smoking and I didn’t like being addicted to cigarettes. I have tried many times to quit smoking. Success was realized when I quit smoking with the help of visualizations and affirmations. Affirmations are simple statements you say to yourself, like “I can”…”I am good enough”…”I am successful”. Saying affirmations works because your subconscious creates exactly what you say to it. However, I was gaining five pounds a month, and being good at math, I realized that if I continued, I would be sixty pounds heavier in a year. Deciding not to go back to smoking to eliminate the weight gain, I turned to affirmations and exercise.

When I started working out, my muscles hurt and I wanted to quit because I wasn’t seeing results fast enough. I would say affirmations help me get through work. Not only my physical strength improved, but also my self-image and attitude towards life. Focusing on the affirmations made the practice easier because I was thinking positive things. Just as my body was reaping the benefits of exercise twenty-four hours later, so was my mind. I found myself repeating affirmations throughout the day.

Combining exercise with affirmations has helped me with many of my daily struggles. If I was in an unpleasant situation, I began to connect with the unpleasant feeling that I was practicing, and affirmations came to mind. They helped me gain the confidence I needed to deal with my everyday fears and insecurities.

My spirit became more and more peaceful as my body and mind worked together as one. Positive energy filled my being. Not only did I learn to accept and love myself, I had more energy to deal with being a single parent.

This simple technique of saying positive affirmations while walking, running or lifting weights is a great way to boost your self-esteem and learn to love your whole self, mind, body and spirit.
