How Many Calories Are in Medifast?
I often write about my experiences with this diet over the past year, so sometimes people ask me questions about how it works exactly. Yesterday, someone asked “How many calories are you allowed per day on the Medifast diet?” I’ll answer that question in my next post.
First, an overview of Medifast and how it works: Before I get into the calorie content, I need to explain how this plan works. You have to eat six times a day. Five of these meals are almost fixed, because you will choose and eat five meals provided to you by the company. These are basically pre-made. You just need to assemble them. There are many options including popular shakes and bars, eggs, oatmeal, soups and stews, chili, puddings, cappuccinos, hot chocolate, lattes, juice drinks, chips and more. There are more than 70 choices in total.
But once a day, you’ll make yourself a hearty, healthy meal called “lean and green.” The guidelines call for you to eat 5-7 ounces of lean meat or protein and 3 servings of vegetables. Obviously, the foods you choose can affect the number of calories you eat each day. The guidelines ensure that “lean meats and greens” are healthy, but the calorie content will vary depending on the foods you choose.
Daily Calories on the Medifast Diet: In most cases, a typical day with Medifast contains about 1,000 calories. Let’s take a quick look at the calorie content of a typical three meals a day. The diagram below shows you what I mean.

510 total (approximately 500 calories left over from lean and green meals)
As you can see, most foods are very similar in their contribution to your total daily intake. Because protein bars are slightly higher in carbs, they ask you to eat no more than two of them per day.
Protein in this diet is also important: As you can see, the calorie content is very low. But, another great part of this diet is that it’s also low in carbohydrates and high in protein. This combo helps keep your body in a state of ketosis because it doesn’t have excess carbs to burn. As a result, your body will start burning its own fat instead of carbohydrates. I believe this is why people often see very fast and dramatic results on this diet.
