5 Top Tips For Kid-Friendly Healthy Lunch Ideas
Making sure our kids eat healthy food has rightfully become a national obsession, and I’m sure like most parents, you want healthy lunch ideas that will help your kids stay motivated, energized and reach their true potential.
There are some really excellent reasons to make sure our kids eat healthy, and here are two of the most important.
1. Studies have shown that children who eat a healthy lunch are more motivated and generally do better at school. This is what we all want for our children, and it’s great that as parents we have the power to make it happen easily!
2. Childhood obesity is a growing problem in North America – 5 million youth ages 6-17 are clinically obese. By introducing your children to healthy nutrition in time, you give them a life full of health!
Of course, there are many other reasons that I will not list. I’m assuming that if you’re reading this, you’re already convinced of the value of providing healthy food and snacks for your family!
So what are some tips to help ensure healthy eating options for your kids?
1. First, have healthy snacks around the house. Children are grazers by nature, and if they don’t have healthy snacks available, they’ll sneak in unhealthy options. In fact, I would suggest that you do a cupboard clean-out and try to remove all the unhealthy snacks so the kids don’t see them and you aren’t tempted to “allow” in a stressful moment.
*Some great healthy snack tips are:
– Hummus and vegetable sticks
– Salsa and refried beans mixed together to make a great snack or dip for toasted pita triangles
– Toasted pita triangles and low-fat ranch dressing
– Sweet and crunchy slices of vegetables such as carrots and red peppers
All of these can be made quickly, easily and kept in the fridge ready for when you need them.
2. Another key idea of healthy eating is preparing food that is easy for your children to eat AND easy for you. You are very likely a busy person, so don’t worry, there are many great quick and easy options.
* Easy Tip: Wraps are easy and kids love them. Try adding a few new ingredients this way. My favorites are Baked Tofu, Peanut Butter and Snow Peas, and Turkey Breast, Mozzarella, Cucumber, Avocado, and Alfalfa Sprouts. Both mixes of ingredients the kids have tried before and new ones. Try swapping out the peanut butter for cashew or almond butter for variety.
3. Try and prepare as much as possible in advance. It is unlikely that you will be able to come home from work and give 100% effort to the children or prepare masses of food first thing in the morning. So choose a time when you can devote yourself fully to it and prepare a few days in advance. Some things like sauces and dips take a while, so work out when is a good cooking time for you! Knowing how to cook is also a great indicator of what type of lunches to make. If you really only have free time on the weekend to do anything complicated, choose things that will last and need very little extra preparation first thing in the morning.
* Top tip: Many meals can be frozen, which is a good tip for after school meals. It’s always a great idea to cook a large casserole, soup or stew and divide into bags for the following week. For school lunches, try to prepare the ingredients a few days in advance. Cooked chicken and turkey breasts will keep for 3-4 days. You can also make any dips like ranch dressing 3-4 days in advance. Tuna mayo will also keep, but I recommend you keep it tightly sealed as it can make your fridge smell!
4. Try to involve your child in the process of healthy eating whenever possible. If your child hates sweets (unlikely, but sometimes it happens!), don’t force them, instead look at salty lunches and vice versa. You want to introduce your children to new foods and food experiences, and this can be an enjoyable process for everyone. Choosing things they really can’t stand will be like hitting a brick wall with every meal.
5. A good tip for introducing children to new food experiences is to use portion control. Mix small amounts of the new food with something you know they like and slowly introduce different types of food this way. Just remember it’s okay for your little one not to like everything, I know they don’t and I’m sure you are the same! For example, try adding avocado and celery to a tuna salad.
Great healthy lunch ideas that your kids will love are easy to find if you follow these rules: Keep it simple, don’t overdo it, involve your little ones, and introduce things slowly. In no time you will have a family full of healthy eaters!
