Many of us will soon make promises that we know in our hearts won’t come true, even with the best of intentions. Why not make THIS new year different?

Why do we do it, make resolutions we know we won’t keep? More importantly why can’t we DO IT? Is it because we REALLY don’t want to achieve what we say on New Year’s Eve? Do we make these “white lie” promises because, after all, that’s not what you do on New Year’s Eve. does no one MEAN what they say? Actually YES, many people mean it WHEN they make resolutions, so think how different lives could be if more resolutions really, really worked.

One of the main factors why so many New Year’s resolutions go unfulfilled is that, although people really mean what they say when they say it, deep down they feel that “only other people’s dreams come true” and make the resolution in public because everyone else in the office does too. It is part of the tradition of the time. They feel this way about their resolution because they lack the self-esteem to believe that anything good can actually happen to them. Someone who has low self-esteem also usually has low self-confidence. They don’t feel capable of MAKING things happen in their lives, so what’s going on? As we’ve discussed, it’s traditional to make a resolution or two at the office party or family gathering, but, in our hearts, many of us subconsciously promise something with more than a hint of truth behind it, something we’d really like to deliver. happen. ACHIEVABLE, an exaggerated example, which nevertheless makes the point, could be “I weigh ten stone but would like to lose eleven stone”. An achievable goal would be “keeping my health and fitness in mind I will lose one and a half stone”.

REALISTIC, if something is not realistic it will not be possible and will reinforce feelings of failure when you don’t manage it. Stretch your abilities beyond your comfort zone by all means, but don’t overcommit.

SCHEDULE, there is no point in having all the other elements in place if there is no schedule, it would be very easy to back off. Set a date by which resolution will have occurred. This could just be for a few months ahead or a memorable date such as a birthday as long as it is a fixed date.

Losing weight is a good example of a New Year’s resolution, as it transcends gender and age. A promise that incorporates all points of the program could be “I will lose 10kg or one and a half stone by Easter Sunday”

This analysis is SPECIFIC – one and a half stone, it’s MEASURABLE – whether you have or haven’t lost your target weight, it’s ACHIEVEABLE – bearing in mind your general health and fitness, it’s REALISTIC – given reasonable levels of health and fitness this goal shouldn’t be a problem, and it has a SCHEDULE which, by the way, should be prominently written in your diary or on the fridge door.
