The Playground Workout For Mums

As a mom you are constantly on the run, dropping the older kids off at school, looking after the younger ones, making lunches and running the household. And you often put your children’s priorities above your own. Your children are your first priority and always will be.

But what about the other important aspects of life that inevitably fall by the wayside? Number one on that list is your health and fitness. Of course you want to look and feel great, but how do you find the time to exercise? The answer may lie in thinking like your children and using your imagination!

Set the scene

Let’s say it’s a little after noon. You have a few hours before you have to pick up the older kids from school. You think it’s the perfect time to train…but your little ones who are home with you want to get down to the playground. Does this mean you should give up your workout? No way!

Think like a child and use your imagination!

You’re at the playground and your kids are having the time of their lives swinging and wrangling on the playground equipment. But you feel guilty about missing your workout. The answer? So… enter!

Here are some great exercises that can be performed on standard playground equipment at a local park. They are huge in calories, fun and totally time efficient! To make it even better, get the kids involved. Not only will they enjoy it but they’ll be nagging you to go down to the park and do it over and over again… now you have your own little personal trainers!

The exercises

1. Playground Track Race: This involves ingenuity. Set up a mini course where you and your kids have to race against each other in commando class fashion. Use your watch or mobile to time each of you to see who wins! The kids will love it and trust me you will huff and puff! Note: Make sure you create a SAFE race track so no one gets hurt!

2. Step Ups: While the kids are playing, find a step that you can step up on. Alternate between 1 minute of medium pace step ups and 30 seconds of fast pace step ups.

3. Move through the equipment: By actually trying to walk through the playground equipment, rings, slides, swings and stairs, you’ll find it a workout to squeeze in and out of the shaped equipment child size. Doing this will really help improve your flexibility and mobility. Just make sure you’re safe.

4. Chin Ups: This is a more advanced exercise, so don’t worry if you can’t perform them yet. However, there are always monkey bars to practice your chin.

5. Jogging: If you can manage to jog around the area while still supervising the kids, do it. It’s a perfect opportunity to take advantage of your stay in the park. If you can’t jog for long, then walking is a good alternative.

6. Get on the swing: More fun for the kids and a great thigh and butt workout for you!

7. Inventive contests: Think of little games you can play with the kids. Things like “who can hang from the bars the longest” and even games like hop-scotch will burn calories while keeping kids busy.

These are just a few exercises you can do while on the playground with the kids. As a mother you are always busy, but deep down you know that exercise and fitness should play an important role in your life. The key is to multitask, be inventive, and take advantage of the time you have to exercise.

Making your health and fitness a priority will make you look and feel your best. You will be happier, more motivated and energetic. And a happy mom makes the whole family happy!
