Child Obesity: The Benefits Of An Active Lifestyle

Natural Benefits

The natural benefits of a healthy and active lifestyle are perhaps the most commonly recognized because of the visual benefit behind this effect. When we can visually understand something, our mind can digest and understand that information much more clearly than things that cannot be seen, such as psychological benefits.

Having said that, there are definitely two parts to the natural benefits that come from a well-balanced healthy and active lifestyle. These include our child’s external physical appearance, as well as their internal physical well-being.

For overweight kids, losing weight can take time, and like most people who engage in physical activity to lose weight, if we don’t see results right away, we tend to give up. It’s important to encourage our children and find ways for them to see progress for themselves, such as documenting measurements, taking pictures, and rewarding them with new clothes that fit their slimmer body shape.

It is with this encouragement and recognition that transformation takes place that can help develop the psychological benefits of a healthy and active lifestyle.

Psychological Benefits

Psychology can play an important role in the success of creating a healthy and active lifestyle for our children, and this applies to both the parents and the child. By creating a positive mindset for ourselves, our children then learn to develop such a routine in their own way of thinking.

Not only does maintaining a positive outlook on lifestyle change help with weight loss success and improving fitness, children can also develop a more positive outlook on their daily activities.

Children who exercise or participate in physical activities have lower levels of anxiety and depression, and this can create a positive atmosphere for things they might not normally enjoy. It is also known that an active child has enhanced cognitive skills. This means they have a greater ability to seek knowledge as their ability to reason and perceive is enhanced.

Psychological benefits, such as enhanced cognitive skills, are caused due to the release of endorphins during physical activity. Endorphins are a natural chemical produced in our body that creates a feeling of euphoria in our mind.

Social benefits

In addition to the two most obvious benefits of a well-rounded physical and nutritional routine, we also have the potential to improve in areas such as social interaction and communication. For a child, this is an important developmental stage that can be very beneficial for future growth and opportunities.

Engaging in physical activities in social settings, for example team sports, gymnastics, dance and so on, can promote the basic skills we need in social settings. These social skills may include leadership, teamwork, reasoning, patience and persistence among others.

Not only do we notice that children thrive in this type of learning, we also see another benefit from it resulting in building relationships and close bonds with other children.

Friendships are an important factor in a child’s early years and can set the stage for many benefits in later developmental years, such as adolescence. The ability to understand how to interact in a social setting gives our children the opportunity to explore not only their own personality, but also the personalities and character traits of others.

Similar to the benefits we see in relation to children forming relationships with other children through social interaction during these activities, it is also apparent that this type of activity can strengthen the relationship between parent and child.

Children strive to impress us by displaying their many talents which they learn and develop on a continuous basis from their early years to their late teenage years. Encouraging such physical activities once again promotes psychological benefits, but also creates a foundation of acceptance and self-deprecation.

Learning Benefits

As we discussed earlier, a healthy and active lifestyle can promote the enhancement of cognitive skills, allowing children an increased ability to acquire knowledge among other things. This can be beneficial not only for development in a physical and psychological sense, but also helps in early learning environments.

The positive results from this mean that children tend to pay more attention while in a learning environment such as kindergarten and school, allowing them to engage and interact with the topic being discussed. Increased focus allows the child to more easily understand the lessons presented to them during the lesson, resulting in a greater level of knowledge.

Not only does a physical lifestyle provide a greater capacity for learning, it is also evident that children can develop an increased level of discipline. With the help of increased levels of focus and understanding, the child’s level of understanding is dramatically enhanced, allowing them to grasp concepts that they would not normally understand or notice.

For a teacher, even a parent, this increased development of self-discipline can dramatically improve learning environments and daily tasks that can normally be a daunting process.

When it comes to self-development, one of the most important learning challenges is that of basic motor skills. Basic motor skills are the ability to interact with objects such as kicking and throwing, hand-eye coordination, the ability to balance by jumping and jumping, and increased and decreased speed of movements.

For a child to explore their world, these are important areas of development that can be learned through trial and error. Introducing physical activities at a young age can help develop these basic motor skills by providing exciting and new challenges for the child to succeed.

What I hope you are beginning to notice is that a healthy and active lifestyle for our children can provide many key benefits that lead to increased early development, in many cases allowing children to reach important areas of development much earlier. Not only do we provide our children with the best start in life with healthy bodies, we also provide a healthy mindset and the knowledge to succeed in anything in life they want to achieve.
