Little Steps to Big Weight Loss

Losing weight is hard. The behaviors that caused the weight to accumulate must be changed in order to remove the weight, and change can be quite difficult. I was overweight for many years, almost my entire adult life. I didn’t like the way I looked, I wasn’t happy when I outgrew my already big clothes, and I was worried about my health. But permanent weight loss didn’t happen until I stopped the behaviors that kept me overweight.

One of my favorite things to do with my kids is cooking. We especially like to bake together. I have bonded with my kids over many bowls of cookie dough. It’s fun, and when the warm cookies come out of the oven, yum! But, I don’t help to “lick the bowl” anymore. I tweak recipes to include healthier ingredients and limit myself to a modest portion of what we make.

Another habit I gave up was cleaning my kids’ dishes. I think most of you moms know what I’m talking about here. We can’t let that last bite or two go to waste, can we? Multiply your no-waste thinking by the number of children whose dishes you clean. For me, this could be another full meal! Waste is not desirable, but I’d rather feed those last bites to the chickens than end up in my waistline!

I had to start thinking about what I was drinking. Many drinks have calories. I used to drink flavored coffee during the day. I just didn’t think much of it. Then, I realized that each cup I was drinking contained about 80 calories. This really adds up. Many of the diet drinks contain chemicals that I choose to avoid. So, although it took some getting used to, water has become my beverage of choice throughout the day. Now I enjoy my afternoon cup of flavored coffee because I haven’t been drinking it for nothing all day.

I learned to recognize emotional eating, which usually happened when I wasn’t even hungry. The problem was, it didn’t matter what emotion I was experiencing. food was the solution! Happy, excited, mad, sad were all reasons to eat a little snack. Getting emotional eating under control was a critical step in losing weight.

I love cookbooks and read them for fun. I had to stop doing this while losing weight. Thinking and thinking about food just made me crave it more and it was much harder to switch to eating in moderation. Eventually, I was able to get back into my cookbook reading habit, but not until I lost the weight. I had to learn to cook and eat for health, not for fun.

These are just a few of the changes I had to make in my eating habits to be successful in losing weight. Many small steps really add up to a giant leap towards fitness. The nice thing about making changes to my habits is that once I had lost the weight, my healthiest habits had become second nature. The ego of today hardly recognizes the overweight me of the past. That’s wonderful.
