What You Can Do to Prevent Childhood Obesity

When I was growing up, few of the kids I knew were considered overweight. I think that has a lot to do with the lifestyle we lived. But today, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 16 percent of children (more than 9 million) ages 6-19 are overweight or obese.

Just a few decades ago, you hardly ever saw a child who looked overweight. In fact, children were more often considered skinny, until they reached their teenage years and began to fill out and gain weight. Today, you don’t find many skinny kids. In fact, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, over the past three decades the rate of childhood obesity has more than doubled for preschoolers ages 2-5 and teens ages 12-19, and has more than tripled for children ages 6-11. It is clear that parents, for the sake of their child’s health, must formulate a childhood obesity prevention program, starting in elementary school.

Today, children as young as elementary school are being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. Type 2 diabetes used to be a condition that didn’t appear until at least middle age. Being overweight is a risk factor for a diagnosis of type 2 diabetes, along with a number of other health conditions, including heart disease.

It’s not hard to see why a childhood obesity prevention program is necessary. What has caused this epidemic of overweight and obese children? A brief look back at recent history and American dietary patterns provides some clear answers.

During the Great Depression, people struggled to put enough food on the table. As a result, there were very few overweight people. The children were thin, as a rule, and remained so into adulthood. The next generation of children, although growing taller and generally better nourished, did not develop weight problems at a young age. What we now call “whole” foods, that is, unprocessed foods that did not contain excessive amounts of salt and sugar, hormones, antibiotics, and food additives, were the healthy foods served every day.

When I was a kid, the term “couch potato” hadn’t been coined yet. In fact, people would think you were crazy if you mentioned the need to prevent childhood obesity. These problems simply did not exist. Children exercised every day both at school through physical education classes and recess in the schoolyard and begged their parents to ride their bikes or go to the playground. There were very few fast food outlets or processed foods and, unlike today, junk food did not make up the majority of children’s diets. Soda, candy, and chips were considered occasional treats rather than daily staples.

Perhaps the most effective childhood obesity prevention program is a return to the general eating and exercise habits of the post-World War II years. Sure, at first you’ll have a hard time pulling the kids away from several hours of surfing the web and watching TV. But once they start riding bikes, playing basketball, soccer, volleyball or baseball for just an hour each day, they’ll be hooked and want more – just like you and me.

Let’s face it – no child wants to be overweight or obese. While you may have to force your kids to stick to your childhood obesity prevention program at first, once they break their old habits, they’ll feel and look great. They will look in the mirror and see the positive results. I believe they will even come to enjoy their new habits. One thing is for sure. For the sake of our child’s health, both now and in adulthood, we must address this epidemic of overweight and obese children now.
