2008 Buffalo Bills Draft Report
The NFL Draft makes for an exciting 2008 NFL season, and once the results are official, fans will be talking. In the new season, the team’s most important choices were in the wide receiver, cornerback and tight end positions. The team’s other wide receivers were all under the standard 5 foot eleven, finding a bigger man for the wide receiver position was important to Billy. When the draft began, the Bills had plenty of draft picks and their first pick was Troy’s Leodis McKelvin, who some believe was the best cornerback in the draft. They also selected Indiana’s James Hardy in the 2nd round, who stands 6’5 and is one of the more highly rated players. It wasn’t until the fourth round that the tight end position was filled by Derek Fine from Kansas.
Some of the other picks were Chris Ellis of Virginia Tech, who was selected as a defensive end or cornerback, cornerback Reggie Corner of Akron, outside linebacker Alvin Bowen of Iowa State, running back Xavier Omon of Northwest Missouri State University, offensive tackle Demetrius Bell of Northwestern State University, wide receiver Steve Johnson of Kentucky and defensive back Kennard Cox of Pittsburgh.
What was the reaction from the professionals and from the fans? ESPN analysts rated the draft pick as fair and praised the team for acquiring Leodis McKelvin and James Hardy. However, the selection of Reggie Corner and Derek Fine was considered somewhat impressive. Fan reactions were also mixed. While some believe the team enjoyed some amazing picks early on, other fans were surprised no trades were made. Instead, the Bills settled on five new offensive players and five new defensive players for a presumably ready-made team.
There was obviously praise for cornerback Leodis McKelvin, considered by many to be the best back in the draft. While some have acknowledged that he doesn’t have “hands”, most agree that he will learn over time as the rest of his body is built for professional football. James Hardy was a popular choice for most fans as he is clearly an asset to the team standing at six feet six inches. Some have speculated that he is just what the Bills need to fix their “red zone drought.”
Chris Ellis was received less favorably as he was not number one and did not have an impressive weight at only 220 pounds. However, he is still valued by some observers for his running, tackling ability and of course his natural ability to avoid blocking. The fact that Reggie Corner was selected suggested to some that the team was focusing on the linebacker position for this draft. It’s easy to see why the Bills were impressed with Corner; He’s been the talk of the town in Akron, and the team hopes to carry that stardom and high performance to the big leagues.
With ten exciting new players, the Buffalo Bills hope to improve on their 2007 7-9 record (same final score as 2006) and once again make some noise in the AFC East.
