But there’s no better time to start exercising than while you’re still in your teens. If you start now, you’ll create habits that will keep you healthy for a lifetime.

  1. Don’t be shy.

    So what if you can’t even run a mile? Who cares if you can only do “girl push-ups”? Don’t worry about your fat shaking when you walk! Everyone has to start somewhere, and no one starts out as an elite athlete. So many people don’t start exercising because they are too shy. I can’t believe how many times I’ve heard, “Oh, when I lose 20 pounds, I’m going to the gym.” That’s ridiculous! Get over yourself and just keep moving.

  2. Start small.

    No one expects you to run 10 miles or bench press 200 pounds on day one. You have to work on these things. In fact, if you do too much too quickly, you’re likely to either burn out or seriously injure yourself. Walking is good.

  3. Do both cardio and weights.

    Many teens do one or the other, but you should do both cardio and strength training for faster results. Don’t worry girls…you won’t bulk up like a bodybuilder. You will simply be healthy and strong.

  4. Muscles need time to repair.

    You shouldn’t work the same muscle group two days in a row…that includes your abs! Your muscles need time to regenerate and strengthen. Give them a break.

  5. Find a friend.

    Things are easier when you have someone to help you along the way. Team up with a friend and exercise together. Even if you can’t work out together, you can still motivate each other. Can’t find anyone to work out with? What about the family dog? He would definitely like to go for a walk with you.
