How Many Calories Can I Have And Still Lose Weight?

To figure out how many calories you should be eating, start with where you are. In other words, figure out how many calories are needed to maintain your current size and then cut back. There are many ways you can go about it. Most people simply pick an arbitrary number like 1200 calories and that’s what they eat, but in almost every case it’s nowhere near enough calories to provide adequate nutrition, let alone the deprivation that ensues.

I have been eating an average of over 2000 calories a day while losing weight and have maintained a good weight for my height for over 17 years. Remember that your body needs calories to sustain itself.

Calculation of basic calorie requirements based on activity level:

Sedentary : 13 X Weight = avg. cal/day

A sedentary person does not exercise at all

Medium Active: 16 X Weight = Avg. cal/day

Moderately active is exercise approximately 3-4 times a week

Very active: 19 x weight = avg. cal/day

Very active is 5-7 strenuous exercises per week.

If you now weigh over 200 pounds and would like to weigh closer to 150, here’s a calculation you can use to get you started: Assuming you add enough exercise to qualify as moderately active, we’ll use 16 as our modifier:

150 pounds X 16 calories per pound = 2400 calories

Less than 500 (using the usual 500 calorie reduction per day) gives us a total of 1900 average calories per day

If you started incorporating a plan that allowed for an average of 1900 calories each day, you would begin to lose weight. The mistake most people make is to cut calories too much, which ultimately sacrifices muscle and sets you up for a feeling of deprivation. In the long run, it’s much better to go slower, maintain as much muscle as possible while burning calories through exercise. Also remember that even if you don’t eat that many calories on many days, you might eat more on the weekends, for example, so it will eventually come closer to your goal of averaging 1,900 per day. Take your total calories for the week divided by seven.

Remember, this average number of calories will give you plenty of wiggle room throughout the week. You can have some treats along with everyone else or add more on the weekends. Instead of constantly repeating, “I can’t, I’m on a diet,” you can now say, “Thanks, that looks delicious,” and enjoy something. It won’t ruin your diet plan because you have a large enough calorie allowance that being more careful some days than others will get you to the average number of calories you want. I tend to eat a lot less calories during the week than on the weekends and my overall average is generally 2000 to 2200 calories per day.

A reduction of 500 calories is a well-accepted amount. You can cut calories further, but I wouldn’t recommend it. It doesn’t do anyone any good to try to lose weight faster, in fact, if you cut your calories too low, you’ll end up wasting muscle in the process, which is exactly what you don’t want to do. If you want faster results, it is better to add more activity, burning more calories at rest.

You may be thinking I’m crazy to recommend 1900 calories a day, but I can say that if you eat too little (1000-1200 calories is too little, IMO) you’re setting yourself up for all of the following:

Deprivation. You will feel mentally and physically depleted. 1,000 calories is not enough for your basic metabolic needs, much less to fuel your activities. Add more food! Just have a little more than you already have, so if you’re allowed 1/2 cup of veggies for example, does a full cup ruin your progress? I doubt it. Eat the whole cup or have two oranges. Fruits and vegetables are very low in calories but provide high nutrition.

Sure, some vegetables and fruits are high in sugar, but it’s natural sugar. I seriously doubt that there are any killer foods being grown on our planet – it’s more likely that the food industry that processed these foods becomes nothing more than a dried powder, then adds more sugars and chemicals to make it resemble the original, more harmful product. than an ordinary apple or banana?

If you are diabetic or need to watch your sugars, have a small piece of protein with a higher glycemic index food, such as an ounce of cheese with an apple. Notice I said an ounce of cheese, not big enough to feed a small country.

Metabolic slowdown Feeding too few calories will set you up for a slower metabolism. Studies have shown time and time again that it can be difficult for heavier individuals to lose weight even if they eat very few calories, simply because their body’s metabolism burns so slowly. As you probably already know, exercise helps speed up your metabolism, but so does food. This is why breakfast is said to be so important, not only to fuel you up, but also because it starts the metabolic furnace burning all day long. If you don’t eat anything until noon, you won’t turn on the stove until noon either.

Has the ultra-low-calorie approach worked for you so far? If not, why not try something more reasonable? Tag along with a friend who doesn’t have a weight problem and see how sometimes they eat more, sometimes less, but on average they eat enough to fuel their bodies and maintain their weight.

Adding more food gives you extra eye appeal. If you spread out 1,000 calories throughout the day, you’ll have pretty modest portions on your plate every time you eat. I like to feel like I’m eating enough and I do this by filling my plate with extra vegetables.

For example, if I have a frozen entree, I cook a cup or more of frozen vegetables to add to my plate. The extra veggies really fill me up, give me the satisfaction I need, and I often have to throw away some extra veggies. Is it a waste of food? No, it’s smart. For me, it’s much better psychologically to have extra food to throw away than to lick my plate because I’m always hungry. I’m also not likely to start wanting something else to eat immediately after dinner if I’m satisfied with the amount I’ve eaten.

Try to learn to like food as it is. Plain mixed vegetables with nothing on them are delicious. It took me a while to stop putting butter on them and then I even stopped Molly McButter (just chemicals and sodium). Eat them plain and yes they are great. Nature has made our fruits and vegetables naturally sweet, and all the “goodies” we’re used to using like butter on vegetables or potatoes sure make things tasty, but they also make us bigger than we need to be. Those “extra” calories add up.

Slowly adjust what or how much you eat

Quit adding sugar to cold cereal. Read the label; all processed grains contain ridiculous amounts of added sugar. No more needs to be added. My one exception is brown sugar on oatmeal. I no longer sugar my cereal at all, but it took me a while to change. Start by adding a little less, then take away a little more the next week until you’re completely used to it. Small changes will add up to big results over time.

If you eat well and focus on increasing your activity, even just a little, then you will continue to lose weight, build muscle and get more in shape, all while increasing your metabolism so you can eat more food!
