Part 3 – Change Your Communication, Change Your Life – The Power of Beliefs Continued

In Part 2, I talked about beliefs and how they can be the under laying culprit if you find you are having a hard time making a change in your life. In this article, I will talk about how to uncover a limiting belief.

Relief From Pain

Why would you want to find out what a particular limiting belief is? As I stated before, most people don’t worry about change unless something is not working in their lives. If something in your life is uncomfortable, you can probably live with it, but if something is causing us pain, then we want relief from that pain.

Beliefs provide the basis of how and why we live our lives. Beliefs can be our most powerful ally or our worst enemy. In my years in athletics there have been many examples of talented athletes who lose to a lesser talent mainly because the lesser talent believed in themselves more. Limiting beliefs can play havoc with a person’s life, but just by merely recognizing the limiting belief a person can change instantly. In Part 2, I wrote about how limiting beliefs can affect relationships. In future articles, I will write more about how to choose and literally attract healthy relationships.

A Personal Story

When I played high school football, the head coach told me that he wanted me to play running back in my upcoming senior season. The fact that the head coach, whom I respected and admired, told me this, the belief I had in myself went up considerably. When I told my other football buddies what the coach had told me, most of them laughed at me and began to count the ways I wouldn’t make it. Of course the first thing they had to point out was my obvious lack of height and weight. I was all of 5’8″ and only 155lbs dripping wet, as they say. They also pointed out my lack of experience and proceeded to name all of the other athletes who would be vying for the same position and how I didn’t have a chance.

Maybe they were trying to be realistic and spare me from what to them seemed like an insane attempt at the impossible; in actuality what it did was inspire me. I decided I needed to shore up my mental state as well, so I began reading The Power of Positive Thinking by Norman Vincent Peale. This one event changed my entire approach to life and is the reason I believe I can achieve anything I put my mind to, which in turn is the reason for all of my successes to come. This belief also pulled me through some hard times as well. So what happened in high school? I became one of the starting running backs and achieved all the goals I set for myself. Later my coach would tell me that I played like a guy twice my size. He couldn’t understand where it came from.

I knew better, it came from belief; he just stoked the fires by also believing in me.

Clues

We all operate with many beliefs about ourselves. One belief can make you totally competent in one area of your life, while another belief can do the total opposite in another area of your life. As I stated in Part 2 beliefs are at the unconscious level and unless you are looking for them they generally go unchecked.

There are certain clues that can tell us if we are dealing with a belief or not. If you remember in Part 1 of this series I discussed the words always and never. If you use these words in connection with something in your life it more than likely has to do with a belief. First let’s take a look at these words. In and of themselves the words are irrational or illogical. It’s very rare that something “always” occurs or something “never” occurs.

Was There Ever a Time?

If a baseball player tells me he always strikes out. I would ask him: “was there ever a time you hit the ball”? He would go back into his memory and chances are he would remember a time he hit the ball, even if it was just in practice. In this particular time frame since the ball player hadn’t been successful, he began “awful-i-zing” his situation. Meaning, he was making it out to be worse than it was. That’s usually when you find the words “always” and “never” used. But then again if the ball player is committed to his belief about striking out all the time, striking out will occur more times than not. Then I would suspect that there is some under laying reason he wants to maintain this belief and I would start to elicit what that is. But, in the interest of time I won’t delve into that at this time. That would be something left for a private session.

Which Belief?

In this next example think about how the use of the word is connected to a belief. “I’m not a very good communicator so I’ll never be a good sales person”. Because of the lack of ability in the first part of the example, not being a very good communicator, the person believes he or she will not be a good sales person; but doesn’t this statement have two limiting beliefs? The person doesn’t believe they are a good communicator. They probably have personal evidence of this so naturally it would extend to areas where communication is a required skill, therefore; it would affect the person’s ability in sales, and reinforce that belief.

So which belief do you work on? If the person does indeed want to be a successful sales person, the logical solution is to work on being a good communicator. If you improve the belief about communication you don’t really have to change the belief about never being a good sales person. The first part should automatically change the second part. If you keep trying to change your belief about being a good sales person but never improve your communication it probably won’t work.

A Core Belief That Changed The World

A core belief is one that forms the basis of our lives and our behaviors. When a core belief is elicited and changed all accompanying behaviors dissolve as well. Take our planet for example, the earth is basically made up of two parts, the surface and the core; the core being the innermost part. Keeping with the earth analogy, when our ancestors believed that the world was flat (a core belief) they believed they would fall off the edge of the earth. When the world was discovered to be round, fear of falling off the edge was automatically eliminated. Thus if you change a core belief all the past limiting behaviors will more than likely dissolve. By the way, there is evidence to suggest that the “world is flat” belief was created to keep people from traveling so as not to discover the riches of the world.

The Mental Diet

In Part 4, I will talk more about core beliefs that relate predominately to our self-image and how to install or rediscover your true self-image. So remember, uncovering a limiting belief is as simple as paying attention to the words you use. Look for the irrational or illogical statements that you make. In fact, as Norman Vincent Peale has suggested, put yourself on a mental diet for a week. Just as you would pay attention to the foods that you eat when going on a diet, pay attention to the words that you use on a mental diet. Write them down. You may be surprised that you overindulge in quite a few negative, limiting and illogical words! Happy dieting!
