Why grass-fed beef?

You’ve probably heard that eating beef is linked to heart disease. That may be true, but it’s not the whole story. Heart disease is linked to grain-fed animals – but grass-fed animals have huge benefits for your health.

First of all, we need to recognize that the body needs certain nutrients in order to “take care of business” on a daily basis. Taking care of business involves ensuring proper cellular growth, regulation and function. One essential element that we must have (the body cannot make) are fatty acids. We need a regular supply of Essential Omega 3 and Omega 6 fatty acids. The ideal ratio is 2 Omega 3 to one Omega 6. Most people get a ratio between 15:1 and 50:1. That’s where the problem starts and the connection with the disease comes in.

What are the benefits of grass-fed beef?

Omega 3s are abundant in seafood and some nuts and seeds such as flax and walnuts, as well as grass-fed beef, lamb, bison and wild meat. Omega 3 in meat is much more available to our body than omega 3 from plants, so meat is our main and most reliable source. We consume too much Omega 6 in our diet, which is found in excessive amounts in grains and vegetable oils (olive or coconut oil is best used.)

Omega 3 is found in the chloroplasts of green leaves and algae. Cattle eat the Omega 3 in the grass and put it into fat. And we don’t have to stop there. Omega 3s have been shown to slow the growth of cancer and prevent it from spreading. As well as speeding up recovery after surgery and protecting the body from the weight loss that goes hand in hand with advanced cancer. (3)

Grass-fed meat has lower total fat and calories.

As if all that wasn’t enough. Grass-fed meat can have 1/3 as much fat as grain-fed meat. This is about the same as elk, wild deer, skinless chicken breasts and other lean meats. If you eat a typical amount of beef (66 pounds per year) and switch to grass-fed beef, you can save about 18,000 calories per year. Without any other changes, you would lose about six pounds a year.

So for your health, focus on feeding your family grass-fed meat. And for the record, it tastes great too.
