Coping With Baby Blues and Post Natal Depression

In this article I would like to offer you some suggestions to help with Baby Blues and Postnatal Depression (PND).

At the time homeopathy was formalized, depression was mostly referred to as ‘sorrow’. These days we all know that depression can be much more than “feeling sad”… and we also have the biochemical evidence to support our observation that all kinds of life events can be the cause of mental symptoms that not only feel really bad, they make us feel uncomfortable and are often downright scary.

I think of Baby Blues as a natural hormonal response after the incredible event that is ‘birth’. Think how hard the body has been working for the previous nine months, growing a new being, copying DNA, putting together the colossal work that is the reproduction of a human’s blue print. Childbirth itself is a trauma for Mom and Bub, and then her body has to make huge adjustments, so – isn’t it understandable that there would be some cravings and anxiety? It lasts a few days. Monitor your blood sugar levels during this time. Small regular meals are an important key.

But if your feelings of sadness and depression have continued or surfaced a few months later, then you need to take some action and seek help.

Do you feel tired all the time?

Do you feel guilty about feeling tired?

Do you feel stressed, angry or find yourself crying easily?

Are you not interested in sex anymore?

Do you have any feelings.. maybe you feel numb?

ISSUES COMMON TO MANY NEW MUMS

Frustrated with the birth?

Did your birth experience go as planned? We prepare for the event by doing exercises and negotiating the best possible situation for the safety of the baby, but if things don’t go according to plan – maybe you had to have an epidural or a forceps or a c-section… then it’s natural that emotions can build up frustration, resentment or even anger and these can be a trigger for depression.

Did they tell you the truth?

Has anyone really told you – I mean sit down and really tell you the TRUTH.. about how demanding and exhausting it is to have a baby and then take care of it, day after day, night after night? Very likely – NO.. and if this was your second child, have you been told that a second child is NOT like having JUST ANOTHER BABY.. no, no, no.. a second child is a lot more work than that!!

Babies get sick!

Then there are the potential problems, colic, skin problems, colds and minor infections, coughs that won’t go away.

Your support network

And support – how much support do you get? Is everyone’s attention on the new baby and none on you?

Sleep and leave

Lie down and sleep whenever baby does.. I know you feel like you have to ‘get on with things’.. but sleep and rest are more important than washing..

You need to have some free time, time for yourself.. relatives can help you. When my babies were young I found a local schoolgirl who would come in at 3.15 every week and look after both kids in another room or take them for a walk in the pram.. for two hours while I cooked dinner.

Routine Routine Routine.. a life saver!!

Find a routine that works for everyone. If you know that the hours of rest are coming, then you can endure those hours. We had tea at five, bath at six and bed at seven and my husband and I swapped bath days, washing the dishes and putting the babies to bed and then having tea in bed the next morning. It worked a treat and we did it for years and years..! So every other day I knew I could have a bath with the kids, relax while they put them to bed and drink my tea in bed.

Just do what you can manage

Do you keep up with the housework and shopping? It’s a HUGE lifestyle change to go from a regular job where you have support and boundaries – to being at home with a new bub. Just do what you can manage each day. If you can’t breastfeed for some reason, that’s okay.. the baby will benefit from your love and grow strong and healthy in your care. Well – these are all perfectly normal situations and needs and I often thought it was a miracle if a new MOM didn’t show signs of mild depression!

SEVERE SYMPTOMS OF DEPRESSION

Feeling overwhelmed, tired and a little irritable during the first few months of motherhood is quite common and expected. However, it can feel like much more than that on a case-by-case basis.

Do you have outbursts of anger or even violent anger?

Do you want to shake the baby to make him stop crying?

Are you having suicidal thoughts?

Do you feel like you’re going out and disappearing?

These are some of the symptoms that can indicate more severe postpartum depression

Ask your doctor, local support group and family for help. Antidepressants can be helpful, but give natural remedies a good test. And, if you have a history of schizophrenia or bipolar disorder, you MUST seek help as soon as you notice any postpartum depressive symptoms.

Homeopathy can really help and you also need daily support and companionship, exercise, good sleep, good food, hugs and treats and lots of smiling and laughing.

DAILY EXERCISE OF LAUGHTER IS NECESSARY

A little tip I used a lot for my depressed clients was to prescribe a good laugh at least once a day. The release of laughter, from a joke or watching a funny movie…even if you don’t feel like laughing when you put on the movie…will release floods of these much needed brain chemicals.

It really works.. try it! Our bodies have the power to heal themselves, but sometimes not in the way we think they will.

HOMOEOPATHIC SUGGESTIONS

There are some wonderful treatments to reduce many of the symptoms of baby and postpartum depression. Read these little treatment snapshots and see if you find one that fits some of your symptoms.

1. SEPIA

This excellent treatment has helped many thousands of women around the world. You feel a bit numb, emotionless, very tired and irritable and have no libido at all. You have this crawling feeling in the abdomen, the period is heavy and painful. Take a look in the mirror. Do you have a saddle mark on your check and nose, either a yellowish tint or a bit darker, maybe some freckles? This is a classic symptom of sepia.

2. NAT MUR

Famous for treating depression, Nat Mur is basically common salt turned into a powerful medicine. You feel tearful and like you’re failing, but you don’t want to show or tell anyone. In fact anyone who offers any sympathy will really annoy you! You notice that you feel cold many times, with physical weakness and lack of stamina. Other symptoms may include headaches, more thirst than usual, dry lips and maybe even chapped lips.

3. IGNATIA

This is a drug that seems full of contradictory situations. Do you feel stressed, always checking that the baby is okay? Do you find that your mood changes often? You sigh a lot! People will notice and maybe ask what you’re sighing about. How about coffee and smoke… Ignatia can’t stand smells or tastes either.. so that would be a very strong post baby symptom. Worried about your weight? Looking for diets to lose the pounds you put on while pregnant? These are all good indications that Ignatia would be useful for you.

4. STAFISAGRIA

We give this medicine after a C-section to help the will heal quickly and if the woman has felt angry or upset during any aspect of the whole birthing process. You find that you need to talk to people about your birth experience, and especially if there are aspects of it that have upset you emotionally. A few doses of Staph will release all those feelings and allow you to move forward with a positive spirit.

5. GOOD LIGHT

I put all my new moms on this remedy as a tissue salt, twice a day for at least a few months after the baby is born. It helps restore your energy levels gently and can make sleep deeper and more restorative.

6. ARS ALB

So now, Ars Alb friends..don’t be offended by these questions! Are you feeling really anxious and scared about the whole being a mom thing? Are you constantly worried that the baby will catch some disease? Want to have everything neat and in place? The house must be clean and all the washing done. shopping and meals ready and on the table. Does the baby need to be clean and tidy in case visitors come over? Do you really need to have someone else around that you can rely on if the worst happens?

Okay!! This is your nature and there is nothing wrong with it, AT ALL.

Well, your natural stresses may be causing you a higher level of stress than you need right now… and a dose of Ars Alb every now and then will really help you deal with your inner urges better. Some other physical symptoms that Ars Alb people usually experience are… feel cold a lot of the time, can’t sleep easily, generally feel better in hot dry weather, love acidic foods and drinks and especially coffee.

7. LACHESIS

This drug has quite distinct symptoms during this period. You feel worse when you first wake up in the morning – kind of sluggish and can’t think clearly. You desperately need a nap in the afternoon, but know that you will feel bad again when you wake up from your nap. You feel better if you can have a good chat with a friend or relative, get all your anxieties out in the open. Talking makes you feel better!

You don’t like hot places, can’t stand wearing anything tight around your waist, and tend to have physical problems like sore throats more on the left side of your body.

8. PULSATILLA

Imagine the small pulsatilla flower, alone in the middle of the vast steppes of Russia. It blows this way and that way in the wind! It sits in sandy soil, and closes its petals when it is hot and at night. SO – the pulsatilla woman loves fresh air and finds her moods very changeable. She can be cold and cries very easily.. sometimes she just cries for no particular reason. You like sympathy and support and rely on your partner for comfort. Aren’t you thirsty? this is very pulsatilla.. we have to remind you to drink. (If you’re breastfeeding your body will give you stronger thirst signals than usual.)

Are you also a bit clumsy and uncoordinated? Swollen ankles and wrists? Don’t like fatty foods? These are just a selection of the remedies I have prescribed with great success over the past 20 years for the baby blues and postpartum depression.
