Visiting Grand Cayman’s Botanic Gardens
The Queen Elizabeth II Botanic Park (you’ll see it called the Botanic Park and Botanic Gardens in various places, so I’m also using the terms interchangeably) is a quiet oasis in the center of the island about 30 minutes’ drive east of George Town just off the Frank Sound Road. The National Trust for the Cayman Islands manages the gardens on behalf of the Cayman Islands and they do a great job. The gardens are open daily from 9am to 6.30pm (April to September) and from 9am to 5.30pm daily (October to March), and admission is $10 for adults, $5 for children 5 and older, and free. for toddlers (2009 prices).
The park covers about 60 acres of managed and relatively natural landscape. It’s a good walk in the hot sun so be prepared. We were not. I forgot my sunglasses and ended the day with dry eyes – but I still didn’t want to leave! The good news for those who can no longer handle difficult terrain is that all walks in the park are on well-maintained, level paths.
The park has a number of distinct features; the true house of the Cayman settlers (Rankin House), the Cayman natural bush trail (Woodland Trail), the breeding center of the blue iguana, the flower garden (Floral Color Garden) and the lake and wetlands. Rankine House and the Heritage Garden are part of the managed part of the park. It is a traditional Caymanian settler’s home surrounded by an equally traditional “sand garden” with a path lined with seashells. The simplicity of the home is a nostalgic reminder of where we all were not so long ago. Sometimes the 21st century can seem quite cold with all its attractions.
The Flower Color Garden (Grand Cayman follows the British spelling so I use that for local place names) can be enjoyed on an easy walking path between beautifully colored trees and shrubs arranged so that one side of the garden is red and the other blue. . Between these two extremes, plants move on the color spectrum from red to pink and purple to blue. Butterflies, large and small, flit among the plants, adding their own vibrant color to the mix. The flower gardens may boast a tea room, but don’t assume that means you can get tea. A drink would be welcome in the hot sun, but the tea house is an ornamental feature of the park, providing welcome shade but no tea.
A lake and wetlands with a collection of aquatic plants and waterfowl flow through the floral colorful garden. The trail by the lake becomes a picnic spot, and of course where the food is, you’ll find animals waiting to collect crumbs or, if they’re braver, begging for more than crumbs. We found two motionless blue iguanas so we thought they were statues at first anyway – then they came running over to see what we had brought to eat! Their approach was so rapid that we became frightened and quickly retreated back the way we had come. It might sound strange when you’re reading this on a monitor, but adult iguanas are big – really big. At about 5 feet (1.6 m) long, weighing 25 pounds (11 kg), and naturally armed with sharp teeth and claws, they are a terrifying sight. I could see myself losing more than a toe if they weren’t friendly. Luckily they were, but it’s best not to feed them anyway.
After a much-needed refreshment stop at the Visitor Center, head up the Woodland Trail. It’s a relaxing walk, about 30 minutes, with trees providing shade for most of the walk and with benches for regular rest. Along the trail is the Grand Cayman Blue Iguana Breeding Center with pens for growing iguanas and a series of pools with green turtles. One pool is called the Crocodile Hole, but unfortunately, or perhaps fortunately, there are no more crocodiles or Caymans on Grand Cayman. The trail is also a popular breeding ground for blue iguanas (I think they are old enough to be released without parental supervision) who also like a mix of sun and shade.
Trees and wetlands are well marked to help visitors understand what they are seeing. Wandering from sign to sign, working on your tan and learning something new in the process is a nice way to spend a holiday morning or afternoon. Sometimes life really is a ‘rose garden’ without thorns.
