How Long Does It Take To Run A 5K?
If you’ve been thinking about getting in shape and considering running a race in the near future, you’ve probably wondered how long it takes to run a 5K.
Generally, what most novice runners fear is that they won’t be able to run the entire distance, not necessarily finish in a certain time. If you’re an experienced runner, this won’t be something you’ll think about as you’ll undoubtedly have times when you’re already looking at the beat, but for beginners it’s often a real problem.
But they don’t have to. Just go out and do your best without any preconceived notions about what time you should or shouldn’t make it.
Another fear is being the last one to finish after everyone else. But unfortunately you can’t do anything about it.
If it’s going to be your first 5k then just do it in stages or part walk part run but just get it out of the way so you know what to expect next time.
Getting good 5k run times really shouldn’t be the main concern of most beginners.
After successfully completing a single 5k, most avid runners usually set themselves the goal of beating their previous best time. However, remember that different race routes and conditions give very different times, so you should usually only compare yourself to the same race and similar conditions.
Of course, what many runners do is test themselves in a 10k afterwards, but that’s a whole other challenge.
So how long does it generally take to run a 5k, that’s what you’re here to find out?
Experienced runners at a good level would normally hope to complete a race in around 25 minutes, while fast, club or competitive runners would expect target times of around 15-20 minutes.
Just so you know, the world’s best time for a 3.1 mile 5k race at the time of writing is 12 minutes 37 seconds by Kenenis Bekele, an Ethiopian runner.
But now back to you – most new runners can hope for a target time to complete a 5k of around 30-40 minutes, but don’t worry, if you’re not getting close to that yet, this could be your next goal. Just remember that everyone has to start somewhere!
However, be aware that most beginners are not doing it to beat a certain time, but have other motivational factors that push them forward, such as losing weight, running with friends, or running for charity, to name a few reasons.
While some beginners may have a finish time in mind, most have other goals, such as completing the entire course without resting or not being the last to finish.
Whatever your motivation is, don’t take it too seriously and go enjoy it while you can.
