Nissan Engine Range for Nissan Skyline – RB20-RB24-RB25-RB26-RB30
Nissan engine range for Nissan Skyline – RB20-RB24-RB25-RB26-RB30
The Nissan Skyline started the life of the RB Engine range. The technical specifications of the line are as follows:
- RB20-2 LITER 1998 CC, Bore 78mm, STROKE 69.7mm
- RB24-2.4 LITER 2428CC, Bore 86MM, STROKE 69.7MM
- RB25-2.5 LITER 2498CC, 86MM BORE, 71.7MM STROKE
- RB26-2.6 LITER 2568CC, Bore 86MM, STROKE 73.7MM
- RB30-3.0 LITER 2962CC, Bore 86MM, STROKE 85MM
Common letter designations throughout were:
- D-indicates double overhead cam (DOHC)
- E-indicates that the engine is fuel injected
- S- means the engine is carbureted
- T means the engine was equipped with a factory-installed turbocharger
- The TT engine was equipped with two turbochargers
The first of the RB20 engines came in the R31 Skyline in 1986. The first incarnations of these engines had two main variants. The earliest version was a dual overhead cam using NICS (Nissan Induction Control System), it was an injection system with twelve small intake guides, it included a butterfly system that split the air intake ports for better low-rpm performance. This system was later replaced by a system called ECCS (Electronically Concentrated Control System), this system replaced the twelve small runners in exchange for six larger ones, although they still retained the twelve ports on the cylinder head, these were divided by air distribution plates.
Various variants of the RB20 over the years have been designated by the addition of a letter code system.
- RB20E-indicates single cam variant
- RB20ET – turbocharged with one cam
- RB20DE-dual overhead cam
- RB20DET-dual turbocharged overhead cam
- RB20P-another variant with one cam
- RB20DET-R – dual overhead cam turbocharged
- RB20DE-NEO – Dual overhead cam with improved bottom end torque designed for lower fuel consumption and lower emissions.
The RB24 was a very rare engine. It was machined from various engine parts in the RB series. The block was from RB25DE/DET, the cylinder head was from RB30 and the crankshaft was from RB20DE/DET with 34mm pistons. This engine was not fuel injected but came with carburettors. This configuration allowed the engine to have essentially the same displacement as the RB25DE/DET, but higher revs.
The RB25 engine was serially produced in four main forms:
- RB25DE-no turbo twin cam
- RB25DET-twin cam turbocharged
- RB25DE-NEO-no turbo twin cam
- RB25DET-NEO-twin cam turbocharged
From 1993, the RB25DE and RB25DET were equipped with NVCS (Nissan Variable Cam System), which allowed the engine to produce more torque and power at lower revs than was possible with previous versions. Other changes that were made were the addition of a revised electrical system, the turbocharger on the Rb25DET was changed from an aluminum compressor to a plastic one, the ignition system was upgraded with the introduction of ignition coils with built-in igniters, eliminating the need for a separate coil igniter. Other changes during this time on the engine were a revised engine control unit, new cam angle and throttle position sensors and a newly designed mass air flow meter. Mechanically, the engines were identical to the Series 1 and 2 engines.
The RB26DETT engine was produced between 1989-2002 mainly for the Nissan Skyline GT-R. The intake for the RB26DETT differs from other RB series engines in that it uses six separate throttle bodies instead of one throttle body. It also uses a twin turbo system running in parallel. Both turbos are the same size and the wastegate is set to limit pressure to 10 psi. this engine is known for its power and performance potential. It’s not unheard of to see people get 600 horsepower out of these engines without any internal modifications. Also in terms of reliability, these engines regularly reach 100,000 miles and even 200,000 miles if serviced regularly.
RB26DETT engines built prior to 1992 were found to have a common lubrication problem. The area where the crank meets the oil pump has been machined too small, which eventually leads to the problem of low oil and oil pump failure at higher rpm. Later versions of the engine have eliminated this problem, and aftermarket manufacturers produce oil pump extension drives to eliminate this problem.
The RB30 engine came in the following configurations:
- RB30S- carburetor with one cam
- RB30E – single cam fuel injection
- RB30ET-fuel injected single cam turbocharged
The RB30DET engine was not actually made by Nissan, the RB30DETT designation actually refers to a turbocharged engine that normally had the engine block from the RB30E, it was mated to a cylinder head from either the RB25DE, RB25DET or RB25DETT heads, the RB20DE/DET were not used due to the difference in bore size .
You may be able to find slightly different variants of the above engines, these are normally produced by engine builders with some industry know-how. These engines are used quite often when people do transplants into different vehicles and intend to use them for performance applications. The engines are powerful and reliable and are capable of generating huge amounts of horsepower when built correctly.
