Late Winter, Early Spring Spinnerbait Tip – Slow Rolling For Big Bass
With “Old Man Winter” releasing his icy grip, it’s time to break out the fishing gear and hit your favorite big bass haunts!
How can you catch some of the biggest bass of the year?
A great technique to help catch more of the hawks migrating from their deep winter roosts is to slowly drop a lure up their nose…
Once the late winter/early spring Sun does its magic and sends water temps into the mid-forties, sluggish bass begin to move up the spots and take the stage for their spring mating rituals.
A skilled bass angler, equipped with the right tackle and knowledge, can take advantage of this pattern by presenting a slow, jerky lure through the cover and right into the strike zone of these very hungry avian creatures.
The Right Stuff – Nitty-Gritty Details of Slow Rolling for Bass
- Rod, Reel & Line Combo – The most common composite rod and reel setup for slow-moving baits involves a medium-heavy action, 6.5-foot to 7-foot trigger rod (casting rod), with a quality baitcasting reel with a 12- to 20-pound fluorocarbon spool. The fluorocarbon range combines minimal stretch with high sensitivity and extremely low visibility which can be important in the clearer waters of early spring.
- The bait – Any spinnerbait is good as long as it is a single spinnerbait attached to a light wire arm with a quality swivel bearing. Blade weight and size varies depending on the depth of water being fished (3/4 oz. lures with longer blades for water deeper than 15 feet, 1/2 and 3/8 oz. with medium blades for depths of 5 to 15 ft. and 1 /4 oz with a smaller blade (Vibra-Bug) for water < 5 ft. deep). Typically, nickel/white blades are used for clean water, gold for painted and fluorescent blades, or copper blades for dirty water. Spinnerbait head and skirt colors vary depending on water clarity and the type of food present.
- The Recovery – Make long casts along the structure you are fishing letting the bait float to the bottom. Once bottom contact is made, begin a slow, steady retrieve so that the bait stays in contact with the cover. Sometimes it’s worth experimenting with the retrieve, so try either a yo-yo or stop and go variation depending on the mood of the bass.
- Structure and Cover – Obviously varies by body of water, but look for deep water wintering grounds at the base of moderately sloping banks or points connected to shallow spawning grounds. Start working the deeper parts of the structure shallow first until you make contact with the bass.
Taking the time to learn how to slow your roll spinnerbaits down to cover will allow you to literally drop your bait in the nose of a really huge and very hungry bass looking to “feed” before the spawn starts…
