The man mostly behind it is Billy Blanks, the seven-time martial arts champion and fast-kicking dynamo you’ll see in countless Tae-Bo infomercials.

A handful of Hollywood celebrities swear by it – people like Sinbad, Shaquille O’Neal and Magic Johnson. Girls like Pamela Anderson, Goldie Hawn and Carmen Electra say much the same thing.

But the next time you’re on your way out the gym door, stop and take a closer look at aerobics. You might even recognize a few faces.

After all, you don’t have to be Van Damme to do it. You can just be the guy next door.

Cardio kickboxing, like aerobics classes, is usually offered in three different forms of intensity: low-impact, medium-impact, and high-impact. While the low-impact version is an excellent way to gain flexibility and form, the intensity of the high-impact class is a great method to lose weight and strengthen your heart.

After a few weeks of taking the classes, you’ll likely build endurance while improving your speed, strength, and agility.

But the appeal of cardio kickboxing lies elsewhere. While benefiting from a fantastic sweat, participants will also learn different punches and kicks that come from different forms of martial arts. In other words, as much as it’s a fitness class, it’s also a self-defense class.

Don’t go to a cardio kickboxing class and expect to come out looking like Bruce Lee. This is just a class designed to combine self defense techniques with cardiovascular exercise to add a much needed “kick” to your daily workout.

The most common testimonials from participants generally revolve around two ideas. One is that cardio kickboxing is ideal for strengthening the muscles, especially the arms and legs, while also getting you in top shape. And secondly, the kickboxing workouts, which many claim are actually highly addictive, break up the monotony of those repetitive aerobic classes.

Above all, cardio kickboxing classes will give you in less time what it takes to do push-ups on a Stairmaster or a stationary bike. The full-body workout – punches, kicks, continuous twists and turns – plays out like something out of a Jackie Chan movie. And you’ll be just as exhausted when it’s over.
