5 Factors That Can Affect the Health of Your Voice
Have you ever noticed that when you’re extremely tired your voice is much weaker than when you’re energized? Not surprisingly, the health of your voice depends on the health of your entire body. So if any of the following 5 factors are typical of your lifestyle, the following 5 factors can also have an impact on your speaking voice.
1. Improper diet
2. Lack of sleep
3. Obesity, if it inhibits your ability to breathe
4. Tobacco use, illegal drugs (even some legal drugs), and excessive alcohol use
5. Pressure
While you may give little or no thought to your vocal health, it’s important to recognize that your vocal cords (vocal cords) are an organ of your body. And, just as your heart or liver or stomach can be compromised by an unhealthy lifestyle, so can the quality, range and ease of your speaking and/or singing voice succumb to an unhealthy lifestyle.
Simple changes to your lifestyle can have a huge impact on your vocal health. However, take your lifestyle changes a step further and you’ll find not only your voice healthier, but the rest of your body as well.
Many people have contacted me for being abusive. In most cases, their diet, sleep habits, weight, and other lifestyle choices did not cause vocal cord damage. What is happening is that these people are putting unnecessary stress and stress on those delicate organs due to the misalignment of their voices. What this really means is that they yell for prolonged periods of time or even just talk, which can actually cause damage to the vocal cords. (A good example would be cheering on your favorite soccer or hockey team for 2-3 hours.)
There is a remedy that will save your throat and your audience’s ears! It’s called projection — learning how to raise your voice without yelling. However, this only happens if you let your chest be your main amplifier and not just your throat and vocal cords. In the process, you’ll discover a richer, warmer, deeper voice that sounds more mature and lasts longer, whether you’re speaking, singing, or voicing for your favorite team. When you do this, you will also find that there will be less stress in your life because you will be breathing with the support of your diaphragm, which you may not be doing right now.
Eat well, sleep well, watch your weight, limit or eliminate tobacco, drugs, and alcohol, and your voice will thank you. Learn how to use your voice, and your body will thank you for taking the stress out of your life. And, in the process, you’ll find a loud sound that speaks volumes about your boot!
