High Blood Pressure – The Silent Heart Killer

“Hypertension is the silent killer.” American Heart Association

According to recent estimates, nearly 65 million American adults (nearly one in three) suffer from high blood pressure. This condition is more common and more severe in African-Americans than Cuacasions. High blood pressure is also common in other parts of the world—a silent killer that affects nearly a billion people worldwide. And its popularity is on the rise.

Hundreds of clinical trials have shown the beneficial effects of lowering blood pressure to acceptable levels. This benefit has been proven time and again in all races, all ages, men and women. Reducing blood pressure to ideal levels reduces the rate of stroke by about 40%, heart attack by 25% and heart failure by more than 50%.

Non-drug lifestyle changes can not only reduce elevated blood pressure, but can also prevent or delay the onset of the disease. Diuretics are also called water pills. They work by helping your kidneys remove excess water and salt from your body.

Beta-blockers help you slow your heart rate and exert yourself less.

Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors block the production of a hormone called angiotensin II, which normally constricts your arteries and raises blood pressure.

Angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARBs) protect your blood vessels from damage caused by angiotensin II. Blood vessels relax and widen, lowering blood pressure.

Calcium channel blockers (CCBs) relax blood vessels by preventing calcium from entering the muscle cells in the heart and blood vessels.

Alpha blockers also relax blood vessels by reducing the nerve impulses that constrict them.

Like beta blockers, alpha-beta blockers slow the heartbeat in addition to reducing nerve impulses to blood vessels.

Nervous system depressants relax blood vessels by controlling constricting nerve impulses from the brain.

Vasodilators directly relax the muscles in the walls of blood vessels.
