As a sand island, the only land transportation is four-wheel drive. Of course, for many tourists, this is the main draw. 4WD enthusiasts from all over the world visit Fraser Island to put themselves and their vehicles to the test on the rugged terrain scattered across the island. From the crowded beachfront to the shifting sand dunes to the forests of the outback, Fraser Island is the ideal place to four wheel drive.
But fear not – it’s not just about extreme driving for experts! Whether you’re a novice or simply prefer a more leisurely pace of life, you’ll find a more grounded satisfaction in one of the many organized 4WD tours offered around the island. Or, if you just want to hang out on your own, you can hire a 4WD for a day of quiet exploration.
However, no matter which option you choose, there are some “ground rules” that should be followed. Remember the dangers of driving on the beach. The farther you are from the shoreline, the softer the sand. The softer the sand, the more likely you are to get into trouble. In general, please slow down and remember that you are in a World Heritage listed environment…so be careful.

No island vacation is complete without a lazy day or two of fishing. Beach fishing is a highlight of Fraser Island. With 150 kilometers of ocean beaches to choose from, why not? The famous “Tailoring” takes place on the eastern (ocean) side of the island from July to October each year. In the fishing world, this period known as “tailoring season” is a highly anticipated event, with large numbers of big fish cruising the beaches. But if you can’t make it between late winter and early spring, don’t worry, sartorial season is just one date to mark on your calendar. The west side of the Fraser has been known to reward the eccentric angler with a fine bag of snapper, cod and flathead.

Or, let your imagination run wild by visiting the ghostly “Maheno” shipwreck, then soak in the crystal clear waters of Eli Creek.
Sitting on a huge freshwater reservoir, Fraser Island is home to a number of spectacular freshwater lakes, some of which rise above sea level. You can choose from over 40 lakes… Wabi Lake, Champagne Pool, Basin Lake… just to name a few. Clearly Fraser Island has more than enough gear to pamper even the most discerning freshwater connoisseur.
For something a little more strenuous, why not hire a paddle board or canoe and paddle down Dundonga Creek. This is usually a 1-hour round trip, so when you return, you’ll be ready to get back to some lighter pastimes.
Whale and Dolphin Watching
From August to October each year, you can book a berth on a whale watching cruise. Enjoy a wonderful half day of sun, salt and sea breeze while keeping your eyes open for Fraser’s famous migrating humpback whales.
The annual humpback whale migration is truly a spectacular sight. After sailing 5,000 kilometers from the icy waters of Antarctica, the family cabin took a break in the waters west of Fraser Island. Seeing adult female humpback whales weighing up to 15 tons (the equivalent of 11 elephants!) grow up from the sea is absolutely stunning.
Don’t worry…if your vacation doesn’t coincide with the migration, you can still take a boat trip to see dolphins, dugongs, turtles and the odd Indo-Pacific humpback whale.
