Perhaps the most disturbing statistic, a recent Swedish study found that 25 percent of 7-year-old girls had tried dieting to lose weight, according to the Oxford Center for Social Issues Research. The Food Awareness Group at the University of Calgary identifies six different factors that affect a person’s body image: visual, psychological, emotional, kinesthetic, historical and social. Apparently, vision has to do with what a person sees when they look in a mirror. Psychology applies to how one evaluates oneself in front of a mirror. The emotional aspect has to do with how a person feels about their body. Kinaesthesia has to do with how a person perceives and feels their body movement. History has to do with any past experiences people remember about their appearance. Finally, the social aspect is how you perceive your body in relation to social norms. These six elements are significant in understanding and ultimately overcoming unrealistic and unhealthy perceptions of the human body.

Women are supposed to be thin and men are supposed to be thin and muscular, but this is often unreasonable and at the expense of health. Most women see modeling as the pinnacle of beauty, however, most supermodels weigh 25% less than the average woman, and these models are often 15-20% below the recommended weight for women of their age and height. In other words, they appear to be suffering side effects of an eating disorder. Therefore, a healthy self-image begins at home. Realize that what people see in magazines is painted, if it isn’t it’s too dangerous and physically taxing to try to achieve. If you can realize that being thin doesn’t necessarily equal a healthy body, you’re on the right track. This path saves you from dangerous crash diets and your kids from unattainable and downright stupid definitions of beauty and health. Women also need to remember that cosmetic surgery only needs to be done for themselves, not for the approval or hope of loved ones. It is true that a healthy life requires regular exercise and proper diet, but none of this is possible without a healthy mindset. So, don’t neglect the psychological aspect.
