Lucille’s BBQ in Lake Forest, CA is part of a chain of locations in several counties. We were going to celebrate our son’s 23rd birthday. He’s in a fraternity and we’re throwing a house party for him and our daughter later this week. So he decided it was a self-funded party. In the end there were 18 people.

The restaurant doesn’t take reservations so my son and his girlfriend decided to go down at 5:45 and put his name on and tell everyone to be there by 6:30. It was a Tuesday, so we really didn’t think the wait would be that long. Are we wrong!

We were finally seated at 8:30. By then, we’d all decided on what we’d have – most of our family had to go to work or classes early the next morning. It took another 10 minutes for the wait staff to take our order.

My husband and I pay for the birthday boy, his girlfriend, our daughter and son-in-law, and ourselves. All four young men ordered some kind of barbecue sandwich. My husband and I were going to split a rack of beef ribs, but were told there were 7 ribs on the rack – about half of what another BBQ chain (Claim Jumpers) served, and about a third more for the price. So my husband chose a different platter for us to share. It was $2 more, but he thought they would be generous with the chicken (it also had three heads of fish and 2 beef ribs). We ordered their salad and baby potatoes.

The food is delicious and I give it a go. The chicken was juicy, the ribs were a bit too sweet for our liking, but the meat was good and the tri-tip was ok. Nothing special really. The salad (completely different from most restaurants!) was almost completely devoid of dressing. The shoestring fries were good too, but we thought they might have been sitting for a while – as they were rather soft.

We are starving! Especially since we haven’t eaten since noon. We were honestly disappointed compared to the taste and quality of Claim Jumpers. My husband and I always share a meal there and still “eat more” when we get home.

Most of my son’s friends were happy – most ordered beer or other alcoholic beverages and enjoyed each other – that’s what having a party is all about!

For a party of this size, the wait staff did a pretty good job. They filled the refillable drink glasses, only messed up 2 orders, and were friendly. They ended up bringing our son a birthday sundae and leading us through the usual songs.

When our bill came it was $95, which did include tax and tip. Now, before you think this sounds ok, a few things to keep in mind: We ate 5 meals (hub and I ate separately, don’t forget) and we had nothing but water to drink.

I think one of my son’s friends said it best in quite some time before we sat down, “Hey Adam, there’s a Fuddrucker’s across the street, I’ll call and they’ll set up a table right now, it’ll cost us half money!”
