Stud Spacing and Wall Framing
Over the years I’ve seen various stud spacing measurements in both load bearing and non-load bearing walls while remodeling and building homes.
How far should we space framing studs on load bearing walls?
Most plans will provide you with this information. If you have structural shear walls, the plan will tell you what size lumber to use where the plywood breaks. The normal spacing on load-bearing walls is 16 inches unless otherwise stated in the building plans. This is the most common spacing for studs in walls.
How far can we space framing studs on non-load bearing walls?
I have seen studs spaced up to 24″ on center on non-load bearing walls. Looking at building code handbooks over the years, I’ve found this to be acceptable for most framing applications. Do not confuse non-load bearing walls with structural shear walls because shear walls have no weight.
According to the structural engineer and your local building department, interior structural shear walls require 16 inches or less on center.
What are the disadvantages of spacing the studs 24″ on center?
Using 0.5-inch drywall with a center stud spacing of 24 inches will give the walls a week or cavernous feel. I’ve lived in houses with 24″ center stud spacing and can actually push the wall and see it move. Using 5/8 drywall will solve this problem in your walls.
What is the benefit of spacing the studs 24 inches apart on center?
The only benefit of spacing the studs farther apart is that you can save a few dollars on the overall cost of building or remodeling your home. I personally don’t recommend this process as the savings are insignificant compared to the total cost of building the entire house.
If you look at a measuring tape between 19 and 20 inches, you will usually find a small diamond. The small diamond is another size for laying walls or floors eight feet high. So you can use 19 1/4 stud spacing instead of 16″ on center layout. This will save you an extra post every 8 feet on the wall or floor joists.
I’ve been writing more about home building issues, trying to help contractors and homeowners build safer, stronger homes.
