Plastic Molded Tanks – What Kind Of Life Expectancy Do They Have?

General rotomolded polyethylene tank dimensions:

Single-wall vertical storage tanks are available in a variety of sizes, from 5 gallons to 15,000 gallons, and in hundreds of sizes in horizontal, rectangular and conical bottom configurations. There are generally two types of double wall containment systems ranging in size from 15 to 10,500 gallons.

Polyethylene tanks are ideal for storing a variety of liquids at temperatures up to 120 degrees Fahrenheit. Polyethylene tanks can withstand sub-zero temperatures, but temperatures over 120 degrees Fahrenheit will start to soften the tank walls and cause them to expand. Prolonged exposure to high temperatures may cause stress cracking. Tanks with fiberglass reinforced walls can withstand higher temperatures.

Polyethylene Tanks are also known as – Poly Tanks | Plastic Tanks | PE Tanks

Life expectancy of plastic tanks:

There is no proven method for determining the useful life of polyethylene tanks. Many variables affect the tank, such as:

  • Are there mixed chemicals in the tank?
  • Are the chemicals reacting or mixing in the tank?
  • What is the temperature of the chemical?
  • What is the weight of the chemical? Some chemicals are more aggressive to tanks than others, such as sodium hypochlorite and some surfactants.
  • How many process fittings are installed in the tank and how big are the fittings?
  • What other features or accessories are on the tank walls and are they properly supported?
  • Is there mechanical agitation in the tank?
  • Are there any external loads or mechanical vibrations on the tank or nozzles?
  • Are the tanks temporarily used in one place and then moved frequently? The more a tank is moved, the more physical stress it experiences from lifting, loading, and strapping to trucks etc. This physical stress can also affect the integrity of the tank.
  • Will the tank be used indoors or outdoors?
  • If the tank is outdoors, in what part of the country is it located? For example, a tank used outdoors in Arizona or Florida will receive more intense sunlight than it would in Minnesota. Although UV inhibitors are present in the polyethylene resins used to mold chemical tanks, UV light can adversely affect the service life of any polyethylene tank.
  • Are the tanks strictly for stationary storage or for transport? Each of these factors will have an impact on the life of a polyethylene tank.

Rotomolded plastic jars have been on the market for nearly 40 years. So we have a pretty good idea of the average lifespan of a rotomolded polyethylene tank. This is just an average overall observation, since each application has many unique unknowns, as mentioned above. Many applications are very “tank friendly”, so tanks have an exceptionally long service life. Other applications are particularly demanding, so the service life of the tank is very short. We’ve seen tanks fail in less than two years, and we’ve seen other tanks that are more than 20 years old.

While there is no guarantee of how long a polyethylene tank will actually last, we know from experience that the average plastic tank lasts 10 to 20 years, depending on the type of chemical contained in the tank and the environmental conditions. their environment. There are exceptions, such as 12-1/2% sodium hypochlorite, which often causes premature tank aging after only 5 to 7 years. Due to the chemical nature of sodium hypochlorite, this happens on all HD linear polyethylene tanks, regardless of manufacturer (it happens faster in cross-linked polyethylene tanks). Since each application has its own unique conditions, it is impossible to make general statements about how long any given tank will last in a given application unless we know all the details of that particular application. Even so, based on the information available, the best anyone can reasonably offer is general expectation. In some cases, a tank was purchased for a particular chemical at a specific concentration and the concentration was later increased, or the tank was redeployed for an entirely different chemical and service condition. In these cases, we obviously cannot predict what effect these changes may have on the life of the tank.

General Tank Warranty:

Tanks have a standard warranty if they are used in an approved application. This type of warranty is 3 years for standard weight tanks and 5 years for heavy tanks. The warranty covers the repair or replacement of malfunctioning tanks due to defects in materials and workmanship. Most tanks that fail due to manufacturing defects will fail within the first few months after the tank is in service. If the tank is still around after the warranty period, it’s likely to last 10-15 years or more.

If a tank is several years old, how do you know if it is still safe to use?

If a plastic tank starts to age, you’ll see tiny cracks or cracks called cracks. Look for cracks in the sunniest areas or on vertical tank domes around nozzles on tank side walls, especially in mechanically loaded connections of piping and valves. The tops of shipping tanks, which are allowed outdoors year-round, are also a good place to look. Over time, these fine cracks can become more intense and pronounced and can become stress cracks. Having a light inside the tank helps with visual inspection as any stress cracks are easier to see with the internal light source in place. The toughness of a good tank is obvious. A tank that is beyond its expected lifespan will sound dull when hit, and may crack as a result. It’s best to check regularly and early to be safe, lest you lose valuable chemicals and incur cleanup costs due to tank failures that go unchecked. Regular (at least annual) documented tank inspections should be a normal part of the plant’s safety and maintenance program. When a tank shows signs of wear or is determined to be unsafe, it is best to replace it.
